Having set a new benchmark of international call-ups last month, Wolves extended that record in October with 17 players selected for their countries from Vitor Pereira’s senior squad.
There have been six changes from last month’s squads, with Matt Doherty unavailable for the Republic of Ireland due to undergoing surgery on a wrist injury last week and Jhon Arias has missed out on a call-up for Colombia.
While four additional call-ups from last month see Andre, Joao Gomes, Hee Chan Hwang and Jorgen Strand Larsen all return to their national teams.
The midfield duo of Andre and Joao Gomes were not called up by Carlo Ancelotti for the Brazil national team last time out, but they return for the two friendly matches as the side takes a trip to Asia to face South Korea and Japan.
That game against South Korea could see three Wolves players on the pitch together, as Hee Chan Hwang has been recalled to his national team after being absent during September. With a place at next summer’s World Cup already in the bag for Korea, they face two friendlies this month, with Brazil and Paraguay the visitors to Seoul.
Over in Europe, Jorgen Strand Larsen is back with Norway after having to withdraw from last month’s squad due to the Achilles injury which had also kept him out of Old Gold action. He is joined for two games in Oslo by David Moller Wolfe, with the pair set to face Israel in a World Cup qualifier and a friendly fixture against New Zealand.
World Cup qualifiers are also over for Santiago Bueno after Uruguay booked their place at next summer’s tournament, so he instead will be hoping for action in friendlies against Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan. Yerson Mosquera is back in the Colombia squad for their games against Mexico and Canada, but there is no place for usual starter Arias, who has not been selected for the friendly matches.
Players of nations who have not yet finished their World Cup qualification campaigns include the likes of Jean-Ricner Bellegarde who maintains his place in the Haiti side ahead of matches against Nicaragua and Honduras, Ladislav Krejci is with Czech Republic for qualifiers against Croatia and Faroe Islands, and Jose Sa is in the Portugal squad as his country take on Ireland and Hungary.
In African qualification for next summer’s World Cup, Tolu Arokodare will be hoping to add to his goal tally with Nigeria in their matches against Lesotho and Benin, while Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa are both in the Zimbabwe squad for qualifiers versus South Africa and Lesotho.
After being unused substitutes for their countries last month, Emmanuel Agbadou and Jackson Tchatchoua will be hoping they get on the pitch this time round for Ivory Coast and Cameroon respectively. Agbadou’s men face qualification clashes with Seychelles and Kenya, while Tchatchoua is due to take on Mauritius and Angola.
In the junior categories, Fer Lopez is with Spain under-21s for a Euro U21 qualification match against Finland, as well as a friendly with Norway, while Enzo Gonzalez remains with Paraguay as they complete their U20 World Cup campaign. After scoring in the group stage win over Panama, the winger was sent off in the next match against South Korea, meaning he was suspended for the final game of Group B against Ukraine. But Gonzalez will hope to return to the side as Paraguay face Group F runners-up Norway in a last 16 clash in the early hours of Thursday.
