Six Wolves players were in international action over the weekend, with new signings Ladislav Krejci and Tolu Arokodare helping their nations to important victories.
Arokodare scored the only goal as Nigeria beat Rwanda to keep their Africa Cup of Nations hopes alive, while Krejci impressed in the Czech Republic defence as they won in Montenegro.
Elsewhere, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde made his international debut for Haiti and Fer Lopez represented Spain’s under-21s for the first time, while Matt Doherty and Tawanda Chirewa added to their caps.
Tolu Arokodare | Nigeria 1-0 Rwanda
Tolu Arokodare came off the bench at half-time to fire Nigeria to a crucial win over Rwanda on Saturday evening. The deadline day singing at Molineux is yet to play for Wolves but got 45 minutes in his legs and a goal. The striker showed great strength in the move before converting from close range on 51 minutes. The win saw Nigeria leapfrog Rwanda into third and to within one point of Benin, who sit in the play-off places. A positive result against South Africa on Tuesday would be significant for Nigeria.

Ladislav Krejci | Montenegro 0-2 Czech Republic
Ladislav Krejci and the Czech Republic strengthened their hopes of reaching the World Cup next summer with a crucial win away at Montenegro. The new Wolves man started in central defence as part of a back four and played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 win. The Czechs scored three minutes in and then again in added time and are now top of the group with 12 points from five matches. Croatia remain favourites to top the group but must travel to Prague in October. This win over Montenegro means the Czech Republic look set for a play-off place at the minimum.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde | Haiti 0-0 Honduras
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde received his first Haiti call up last week and on Saturday made his international debut. The Wolves man featured as part of a midfield three and played 81 minutes of his country’s goalless draw with Honduras. The draw kicked off their Concacaf World Cup qualifying group and all four teams are level with one point each. Costa Rica are up next for Haiti on Wednesday.
Matt Doherty | Republic of Ireland 2-2 Hungary
The Republic of Ireland claimed a point on day one of their World Cup qualifying group with Hungary. Matt Doherty continued to show his versatility by slotting in at left-back and played the first 66 minutes of the 2-2 draw. Ireland fought back from two goals down and equalised in the third minute of added time to begin the group with a draw. With Portugal likely to top the group, Hungary are set to be Ireland’s rivals for a play-off spot, so victory over Armenia on Tuesday is crucial.
Tawanda Chirewa | Benin 1-0 Zimbabwe
Although Marshall Munetsi was suspended for Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Benin, Tawanda Chirewa was given a start for his country. The Wolves man played up front for 84 minutes, but Benin shaded things by a goal to nil. Zimbabwe are bottom of their qualification group, so are unlikely to progress to the finals.
Fer Lopez | Spain U21s 3-0 Cyprus U21s
Fer Lopez had never been capped for any age group of Spain until Friday night. The new Wolves wide man came on for the final 31 minutes of Spain under-21s’ 3-0 win over Cyprus. The win saw Spain begin qualification for the U21 Euros qualification on the perfect note with victory on day one. For Lopez, he also spent time training with the Spanish senior team while away.
Elsewhere
Jose Sa was an unused substitute as Portugal began their World Cup qualifying group with a thumping 5-0 win in Armenia. Emmanuel Agbadou was also left on the bench as the Ivory Coast beat Burundi to leave qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations in their own hands.
Coming up
On Money, Ladislav Krejci and the Czech Republic are back in action when they take on Saudi Arabia in a friendly, while a whole host of Old Gold stars could feature during Tuesday’s internationals. Emmanuel Agbadou will hope to return to the pitch for the Ivory Coast’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against second-placed Gabon. Tolu Arokodare and Nigeria have the tough task of South Africa away.
Santiago Bueno will hope to feature for Uruguay against Chile, likewise Matt Doherty when Ireland face Armenia. Marshall Munetsi will be back from suspension and he and Tawanda Chirewa will aim to add to their Zimbabwe caps. Also played on Tuesday are Jose Sa and Portugal, Jackson Tchatchoua with Cameroon and David Moller Wolfe’s Norway, as well as Fer Lopez and Spain’s under-21s.
On Wednesday, it’s the turn of Jhon Arias and Yerson Mosquera when Colombia face Venezuela, while Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will hope for cap number two when Haiti face Costa Rica.
