As Jhon Arias makes a move away from South America to join the Premier League, wolves.co.uk reflects on the Colombian’s flourishing career so far.
Having begun his career in his home country before blossoming in Brazil, the 27-year-old has lit up Serie A with Fluminense as well as starring in the inaugural Club World Cup, and a pictorial journey below guides supporters through his highlights.
19th February 2018 | Arias moved to Mexico to get his footballing break as an 18-year-old with Dorados de Sinaloa and Tijuana, before returning to his home country to sign for Patriotas Boyaca.
1st July 2019 | Following a loan spell with second tier Colombian side Llaneros, he was back in with Patriotas for their 2019 Categoria Primera A campaign where he became a regular in the team.
23rd September 2020 | In late 2019, Arias signed for America de Cali, one of the oldest clubs in Colombia, and played 29 times for the side in the top flight as the team secured the league title.
22nd October 2020 | Arias also experienced continental football with America during his only season at the club, taking on sides such as Brazilian outfit Gremio in the Copa Libertadores.
28th April 2021 | Although unable to establish himself as a regular starter with America, he moved to one of the most successful clubs in Colombia, Independiente Santa Fe, for the 2021 season.
12th May 2021 | He quickly became a first-choice at Santa Fe, and his performances during the 2021 Copa Libertadores – which saw him play against Fluminense in the group stage – attracted interest.
2nd September 2021 | His move arrived in the August of 2021, as Arias headed abroad for the first time in his senior career and sign for Fluminense, making his debut in a 2-0 home win over Bahia.
2nd September 2021 | Arias’ first goal for the club would arrive the following week as in just his second game for Fluminense, he netted the opening goal of a 1-1 draw at home to Juventude.
9th December 2021 | The Colombian spent most of his first season in Brazil as a backup, regularly coming off the bench to play as an attacking midfielder or on the left side of midfield.
1st March 2022 | After a slow start to his first full season with Fluminense, Arias began to exert his quality onto the team and showed his versatility by playing on either wing as well as in the forward positions.
6th April 2022 | Arias scored twice during Fluminense’s Copa Sudamericana campaign, both against Oriente Petrolero, but his side disappointingly dropped out of the competition at the group stages.
8th June 2022 | He found his shooting boots in the league during summer 2022, as he scored the first goal of a 5-3 thriller against Atletico Mineiro. From this game forward, he would start almost every time he was available.
28th September 2022 | Arias ended his first full season in Brazil with 16 goals and 17 assists from 62 appearances – including an assist in the Campeonato Carioca final to help his side to the title over Flamengo.
28th March 2023 | Having made his international debut in summer 2022, Arias became a regular in the team during 2023 and has since racked up 31 caps for Colombia.
3rd May 2023 | Arias produced the goods once again for Fluminense during 2023, scoring twice and getting an assist in a Copa Libertadores group stage clash with Argentinian giants River Plate.
8th August 2023 | The Colombian built a strong relationship with current Wolves midfielder Andre during their time together in Brazil as the pair guided Fluminense into the Copa Libertadores final.
19th October 2023 | Goals and assists kept coming for Arias in the league, although when he wasn’t available, Fluminense would struggle, ending the season in 7th position.
4th November 2023 | However, Fluminense experienced much success in their Copa Libertadores campaign, as Arias helped his side to an extra time win over Boca Juniors in the final.
22nd December 2023 | Their continental triumph saw Fluminense compete in the FIFA Club World Cup that winner, and although they fell to Manchester City in the final, Arias was awarded the ‘Bronze Ball’ for being the third best player in the competition.
26th March 2024 | By the time 2024 arrived, Arias was now a regular for Colombia and notched his first international goal against Romania in Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.
14th July 2024 | While he stepped up as one of the main men in his country’s Copa America campaign last summer, assisting twice on the way to a final defeat to Argentina.
20th August 2024 | Arias was also a key player in his club side, leading them to glory in the Recopa Sudamericana (the South American Super Cup), but his absence to the Copa America saw Fluminense fail to win any of the nine games without him and put them in relegation trouble.
1st November 2024 | But his return to the team and his seven goals in the second half of the season galvanised Fluminense and helped them to recover to a 13th place finish.
8th July 2025 | Earlier this summer, Arias shined in the first edition of the revamped Club World Cup, leading Fluminense to the final and being named as part of the team of the competition.
17th July 2025 | Arias brought his Fluminense career to a close last Thursday evening, after years as the team’s lynchpin, playing his final match against Cruzeiro which ended in a 2-0 defeat.
