Report | Wolves 1-1 Brentford

Wolves 1 (Munetsi 75) Brentford 1 (Mbeumo 20)

Wolves ended their 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a draw against Brentford at Molineux, bringing an end to a run of six consecutive final-day defeats.

In their final outing at Molineux for the season, Wolves fell behind to a first-half Bryan Mbeumo strike, which gave the Bees the lead heading into the break.

However, with 15 minutes remaining, Marshall Munetsi scored his second goal for the club with a spectacular effort, helping Wolves secure one final point to round off their 2024/25 season tally.

The early stages of the contest were largely uneventful, with the first significant action arriving 10 minutes after the opening whistle. Nelson Semedo produced a delivery aimed for Matheus Cunha, positioned on the penalty spot, but his tame connection failed to test Mark Flekken, who gathered comfortably.

Wolves settled and gradually began to assert themselves. Semedo forced Flekken into a second save moments after his first, as he cut inside and swung his left boot at the ball, and although not powerful, his effort required Flekken to get down quickly to make the save.

Despite Wolves’ growing dominance, Brentford posed a threat on the counter-attack. Kevin Schade had a promising opportunity when he cut inside striking low and hard, however, Jose Sa was equal to the effort.

Moments later, Brentford snatched the opening goal of the game. Yoanne Wissa won possession high up the pitch and had a shot deflected into Christian Norgaard’s path; the Dane did well to pick out Mbeumo inside the penalty area, and the forward made no mistake slotting into an unguarded net.

The following piece of noteworthy action came when Brentford had a golden chance to double their lead shortly before half-time. Wissa led a solo counter-attack and picked out the onrushing Keane Lewis-Potter, now one-on-one with Sa, but the full-back lifted his effort too high as it looped over both Sa and the crossbar.

The hosts continued to push for their equaliser heading into the break and went close on two occasions, with Flekken forced to deny volleyed efforts from both Cunha and Semedo.

Firstly, Rayan Ait-Nouri did excellently to control a bouncing loose ball inside the penalty area and teed up Cunha, but the Brazilian’s volleyed effort could only find Flekken’s midriff. Moments later, Semedo controlled the ball into his stride and struck a sweet volley, forcing Flekken into an outstretched diving save.

Half-time | Wolves 0-1 Brentford

The pattern of an eventful contest continued into the second half as both sides enjoyed chances early in the period.

First, Joao Gomes neatly threaded Ait-Nouri one-on-one with Flekken, and from a tight angle, did well to sting the palms of the ‘keeper, who could only turn the effort around for a corner. Shortly after, Brentford’s front three combined smartly to create an opportunity for Wissa, but his effort crashed into the side netting.

Chances continued to materialise for Wolves as they probed for an equaliser. Munetsi burst down the right flank and squared a perfectly placed ball across to Goncalo Guedes, but the forward dragged his effort narrowly wide of the post.

Proceedings became scrappy following the flurry of chances for both sides, prompting Vitor Pereira to turn to his bench for a boost, introducing both Jorgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes.

Strand Larsen soon repaid his boss’ faith, assisting Munetsi for the equalising goal 15 minutes from time. Sa’s long kick was flicked on by the Norwegian into Munetsi’s path, and the Zimbabwean superbly thumped a bouncing ball into the roof of the net, leaving Flekken with no chance.

Wolves pushed for the elusive winning goal in the final 10 minutes, but they came no closer than two efforts from Cunha - both of which sailed over the crossbar.
