Toti | 'We’re going to go with everything'

Toti believes Wolves have what it takes to finish the season on a high as the Old Gold prepare for their final match of the season against Brentford at Molineux on Sunday.

Having played every minute under Vitor Pereira since the head coach’s arrival in December, the Portuguese defender will be looking to earn his 101st appearance in gold and black this weekend after celebrating his centenary milestone at Selhurst Park in midweek by leading the team out as captain.

Although he is one of the most senior and longest-serving members of the Wolves squad, Toti has still not experienced being on the winning side on the final day of the Premier League, so he is determined to set the record straight against the Bees.

On ending the season at home

“For the last game, it’s good that we’re going to play at home. We have that home factor with the fans and so the environment is going to be favourable for us.

“We need to respect them as a team, because they have a good team too, but we need to know that what we've been doing, the hard work we've been doing with Vitor, and we’ve already had big games that we’ve won and we had the crazy run with seven games unbeaten, so why not in the last game of the season go and beat them?

“We still have something to achieve as well, we can still get some more points and stay higher in the table, so we’re going to go with everything.”

On making 100 appearances for Wolves

“It feels good. It was a great moment for me and I’m very proud. I still remember the first game when I arrived, my first game at home against Southampton, and now I’ve made 100 games for this club.

“I didn't expect it was going to be as quick as this, but I’m very proud. It’s down to the hard work that I’ve been doing since I arrived.

“There’s been ups and downs, but this is football. There’s been just great moments and I’ve been learning every day with these players, and the experienced players since when I arrived. Playing alongside Romain Saiss, Conor Coady, and until today I still talk with them and it was good to learn from them. And now, having the players from today, it’s always good.”

On captaining the team for his 100th match

“I was actually told just before the game. Nelson [Semedo] spoke with me, and it was kind of like a reward for what I’ve done and because they knew I was going to do the 100th game as well, so they told me it was going to happen, and I was happy.

“I took it very seriously, as serious as I take each game, and I tried to give my best and have the voice inside of the pitch to try to help my teammates. I told them we still have two games left and although I was going to be the captain, it didn't change anything, and I just wanted them to face the game as serious as possible

“Sometimes at the end of the season, the players relax a little bit and just want to go for their holidays, but like the gaffer told us, we still had two games left because we still had a chance to go in the higher position in the table, so I told them to try to take everything as seriously as possible.

“Of course, we had a tough game, we knew that it would be, but we’re still proud of what we’ve done and the work we’ve been doing since Vitor arrived as well.”

On stepping up as a leader

“Especially in my position, being a centre back and being behind the game, you see everything forward. You need to be one of the leaders inside of the pitch and have the voice, even if you're not a captain, and wearing it myself, I’ll be proud.

“We have Nelson and have had other players as a captain [since he’s been at Wolves], so I try to use them as an example as well, because one day I might be in that position myself.

“I would always be happy to wear it. If the gaffer tells me to do it, I will do it and I’d try to be the best captain for my teammates and try to help them inside and outside the pitch.”

On Pereira wanting more from the players

“He’s said that since the first game, even since the first training, he made it very clear, and of course, during the summer, players are going to come, others are going to leave, and it’s going to be important to the ones that are here [to improve next season].

“But even the players who came in the summer, I think Vitor has brought the best from Larson as well, he’s been scoring a lot of goals, and I'm happy for him. It was his first season for us, and he’s scored 14 goals, which is very good, especially in the moment that we were in.

“But more players are going to come and, in this system, where we always have players arriving in the box, so if it’s not the strikers it’s going to be the midfielders and the wingers to score the goals.”
