Hugo Bueno believes Wolves' pre-season campaign is moving in the right direction and felt good on Tuesday evening, as the Old Gold beat FC Porto 1-0.
The Spaniard was once again given the nod at left-back in a strong-looking starting eleven, and it was in the first half where the winning goal was converted by Pedro Neto from a Matheus Nunes cross. It was the latest step up in intensity for Lopetegui’s squad, who have three more fixtures before the Premier League starts again, and Bueno believes the group is in a good place for this stage of the summer.
On a pre-season win over Porto
“It was a good test for us. I think the team worked really hard, we’re happy for the win and it’s still pre-season so we’re getting ready, getting fitter. We have to keep going.
“I felt good on the pitch. It was the first game with 45, plus a couple of minutes, so obviously I’m getting fitter, getting ready, but it’s tough.
“We had a good opponent in Porto, but I think we did well and we have to keep going and think of the next. We know it’s a process, step by step. There are lots of steps to go to be ready for the start of the season but we’re on a good way.”

On a first pre-season under Lopetegui
“It’s been good, but tough. Double sessions but all of the staff are doing a brilliant job to keep us good, to keep us in shape. Everyone’s working really hard. We know how pre-season is.
“The atmosphere is always the same, we know some good players left, but we have to deal with it and think about the future ourselves. We have to keep our changing room in the same way, with the same vibes, working hard and looking for positives.”
On looking to kick on now
“Of course, I have loads of things to improve, I’m still young, but I’ll do it with the help of my teammates and manager. Maybe I need to be more aggressive on the pitch and, like I always do try, get forward, making the difference in defence and attack, that’s my objectives.
“As a team, we’re working to be good and step by step we can achieve good things. I’m not thinking about what happened last season, we know it was tough, but we’re getting ready to make sure this season we can do good things.”
