As Wolves prepare for their 2023/24 Premier League fixture schedule to be confirmed on Thursday morning, here is everything you need to know ahead of the new season’s calendar announcement.
#1 When are fixtures being released?
Wolves’ fixtures will be released on wolves.co.uk, the Wolves App and across the club’s social media channels at 9am on Thursday 15th June, and can be found by clicking here following that time.
Make sure you never miss a change to Wolves’ 2023/24 schedule by syncing the fixture list to your calendar here, which will update automatically. There is also the option to sync the women’s first-team, under-21s and under-18s upcoming matches as well. However, dates and kick-off times of matches will be subject to change.
#2 What are the key dates?
After last season’s fixture schedule was greatly affected by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the previous two campaigns saw disruption due to Covid-19, the 2023/24 season will revert to some form of pre-pandemic ‘normality’.
The season will get underway on the weekend of 12th August and will run until the final day on Sunday 19th May 2024, where all of the final round of matches will kick-off simultaneously. The popular Boxing Day and New Year’s fixtures will also go ahead as normal, with no two fixtures in this period taking place within 48 hours of each other.
Consisting of 34 weekend matches, three midweek fixtures and one Bank Holiday game, the schedule also provides for a return of the mid-season winter break, which will see half the league play on the weekend of 13th January and the other half feature on the 20th January weekend.
Regarding cup competitions, Wolves will enter the Carabao Cup at the second round, with fixtures due to be played on the week commencing 28th August leading to the final on 25th February, while the FA Cup third round will take place on the weekend of 6th January, with the final on 25th May.
#3 Who will Wolves be facing?
Having secured their place in the Premier League for a sixth consecutive season, Wolves will face 16 of the same opponents as last season. But following Southampton, Leeds United and Leicester City’s relegation from the division, the Old Gold will now face home and away fixtures against Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town.
Wolves have already faced the Clarets and the Blades on numerous occasions in the top-flight over the past six years, but it will be the first time they would have faced Rob Edwards’ Hatters in the competition. The former gold and black defender, academy coach and interim first-team boss has led Luton back to the top-flight for the first time in more than 30 years, and they haven’t gone head-to-head Wolves in the highest tier of English football since January 1984.
Edwards was in the Wolves team the last time they faced Luton in league action, as Karl Henry’s goal secured a 3-2 Championship win at Kenilworth Road back in March 2007.
#4 Which games will be shown on TV?
That hasn’t been decided yet. All weekend fixtures will be released with Saturday 3pm kick-off times while midweek games are scheduled for either Tuesday or Wednesday at 7.45pm, before the TV picks are confirmed closer to the start of the season.
Matches this season will once again be broadcast live by Sky Sports, TNT Sports (the new name for BT Sport) and Amazon Prime Video. Following the fixture list being announced, those three Premier League broadcasters will then decide what matches they would like to show. Similarly to last season, this campaign is due to see 128 matches broadcast on Sky, 52 on TNT and 20 matches will be available on Amazon.
#5 Can we figure out the fixtures from previous seasons?
Not really, as compiling the fixture list is the result of a meticulous and painstaking process that lasts almost half a year and involves the scheduling of 2,036 matches across the top four divisions – which you can read about here, but they do often throw up some similarities.
Wolves have started all but one of their five previous Premier League campaigns away from home, with Molineux only opening their fixture schedule in 2018/19 against Everton. Since then, the Old Gold have faced Leicester twice as well as Sheffield United and Leeds all on the road.
All five of Wolves’ final matches of the season have been against a team from the ‘big six’ and just one of those has been at Molineux – a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in 2020/21. The other four have seen the side twice travel to Anfield to face Liverpool, as well as fixtures away at Chelsea and Arsenal.
Wolves have also been scheduled to face title-chasers Liverpool and Manchester City back-to-back on several occasions. The first of these was in December 2019 as Wolves followed up the incredible fightback win over City at Molineux before heading to Anfield less than 43 hours later, while December 2021 also saw Wolves face both teams inside the same week. But last season, it was set to happen twice, firstly in September 2022 – before the death of Queen Elizabeth saw Wolves’ visit to Liverpool put back to March – and again earlier this year, as a 3-0 loss at the Etihad was followed up by a 3-0 win over the Reds at Molineux in the next match round.
