Gomes receives first senior Brazil call up

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has received his first senior call up to the Brazilian national team.

The 22-year-old will be hoping to make his international debut in Brazil’s upcoming friendly fixture with Morocco later this month after being selected by caretaker boss Ramon Menezes.

Despite plenty of promise in his young career to date, Gomes had not previously appeared for his country at junior level.

He received just a single selection to the under-20s in the past, but he was unable to play after former club Flamengo called him back to play in important matches in their league championship.

Gomes was part of Tite’s longlist for the 2022 World Cup having made the 55 names initially sent by the former head coach but having missed out on the final selection he now has the chance to make his debut in yellow and blue.

Having moved to the West Midlands in January, he made an immediate impact at his new club. Gomes came off the bench with 20 minutes to go as Wolves were 1-0 down in the second-half at Southampton, but the Brazilian was the hero as he scored the goal to earn his side all three points.

Gomes is one of eight Premier League players to be selected by Ramon, with Brazil set to face the Atlas Lions in a friendly on Saturday 25th March in Tangier.

If the central midfielder was to make his national team bow in the March international period, he would be the first to appear for Brazil while a current Wolves player.
