Following the 2022/23 season resuming following the FIFA World Cup, Wolves played just three competitive matches during the month with the side getting off to a positive start under their new head coach with victories over Everton and Gillingham, to secure a first League Cup quarter-final spot in 27 years.
Scoring in both of those wins was Ait-Nouri, who came off the bench at Molineux to put Wolves two to the good in the Carabao Cup, before finding the end of an Adama Traore cross to secure a dramatic last-minute three points in Lopetegui’s first Premier League outing.
With two Castore Player of the Month awards under his belt for this season already, captain Neves has continued his impressive season in the centre of the park under his former Porto boss, being statistically the strongest player in the win against the Gills in his first match back after the World Cup, thanks to having the most shots, most individual possession and making the most tackles.
Alongside Neves, Podence was Wolves’ top scorer for the last calendar year and he found his third of the season on Boxing Day when he turned home the equaliser at Goodison Park in one of his best overall performances of the campaign, which saw him make the most tackles of any old gold player.
Sa returned from the World Cup having not featured for his country, but he has played every minute of Lopetegui’s opening trio of fixtures and made crucial saves in all three – but especially with his four stops against Everton – to help Wolves to end 2022 in positive fashion.
