Wolves’ Portugal trio into the World Cup quarter-finals

Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes and Jose Sa have the chance to represent their country in a World Cup quarter-final after Portugal eased past Switzerland in the last 16 on Tuesday night.

The Wolves trio all started the 6-1 hammering of the Swiss on the bench, but Neves did appear as a late substitute for Bernardo Silva before the final goal was curled home by fellow substitute Rafael Leao.

Wolves skipper Neves battled well for the final 10 minutes of the contest in Qatar, and ended the evening having made the joint most interceptions of anyone on the field wearing a Portugal shirt, while also enjoying a 100 per cent pass completion from the 14 touches he had while on the pitch.

But it was 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos who had a night to remember. The Benfica striker was brought into the starting line-up in place of Cristiano Ronaldo by head coach Fernando Santos and repaid his faith with a stunning hat-trick.

Veteran defender Pepe and Borussia Dortmund full-back Raphael Guerreiro were also on the scoresheet on a remarkable night for the Portuguese.

Neves, Nunes and Sa will all hope to be involved when Portugal face Morocco – captained by former Wolves man Romain Saiss – in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 3pm.
