The trio will head out to Qatar following Saturday’s visit of Arsenal to Molineux, in what will be the final Premier League match before the campaign breaks for the competition.
The 2022 World Cup will be the first time Neves has been called up to represent his county in the competition, having narrowly missed out on the final 23-man Portugal squad four years ago in Russia.
But since then, Neves has been a regular in the squad, being part of the side which won the 2019 UEFA Nations League and was one of four Wolves players included in the Portugal squad for UEFA Euro 2020.
Yet to make his senior international bow, Sa has been involved in his national team since May 2017 when he was first called up as part of the 24-man squad for that year’s FIFA Confederations Cup. Although he missed out going to the World Cup four years ago, like Neves he was part of the squad which claimed the 2019 Nations League on home soil.
Sa has been an unused substitute for Portugal during the World Cup qualification campaign as back up to former Wolves man Rui Patricio before Porto keeper Diogo Costa got the nod in the play-offs against Turkey and North Macedonia.
Despite missing the last few matches through injury, Nunes has been selected for his first World Cup with Portugal. The midfielder, who spent most of his life in the country, only chose to represent Portugal last year having been born in Brazil.
But he has since played nine times for Santos’ men, scoring his first international goal during a 3-1 win over Turkey in the qualification semi-finals to help Portugal reach the 2022 World Cup finals.
Neves, Sa and Nunes were joined by club teammates Nelson Semedo, Joao Moutinho, Goncalo Guedes and Daniel Podence in Santos’ preliminary 55-man squad, before it was narrowed down to the final 26.
Portugal’s 2022 World Cup group stage fixtures are as follows:
- Portugal vs Ghana | Thursday 24th November | 4pm | Stadium 974, Doha
- Portugal vs Uruguay | Monday 28th November | 7pm | Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail
- South Korea vs Portugal | Friday 2nd December | 3pm | Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan
It is yet to be seen which other Wolves players could be heading to Qatar this winter, with many national teams still to name their squads.
Updates on the progress of the Wolves stars in action at the 2022 World Cup will be provided across the club’s social media channels and on wolves.co.uk.
