Sarkic | 'Hard work pays off when you stick together'

Matija Sarkic believes Wolves’ win on Wednesday evening was reward for their hard work and organisation, as Boubacar Traore sent the old gold through in the Carabao Cup.

Wolves dealt with everything Leeds United asked of them by sticking together and had threatened before Boubacar came off the bench to fire home his first goal for the club in front of the South Bank. For Sarkic, it was his second appearance for the club, and produced a first clean sheet, and the goalkeeper heaped praise on those in front of him, for how hard they worked.

On keeping a clean sheet

“I can’t ask for more. Credit to the boys in front of me for working hard and being organised until the last minute. When we were under pressure the last five minute, it takes a lot to keep that focus and concentration.

“If you can keep a clean sheet, you’re always going to be in games. I thought we worked really hard as a team, communicated well, and everyone did their jobs. It’s credit to the team for their hard work.”

On dealing with Leeds’ start

“We knew they were aggressive up front and we had to play around it, but I thought we dealt with it really well and stuck together. It was a hectic first five or ten minutes, but it’s part of the game, you have to deal with that pressure and once we were out of it, I thought we had control in the first half and most of the game.

“I’ve just been waiting, and it’s been a long wait since Preston, but I can only take my chance when it arrives, and I think I’ve done that. I’m happy and happy for the team.”

On being happy for Boubacar

“I just loved it. We worked really and that hard work pays off when you stick together, and do all the basics right, so I’m really happy.

“He’s come from France and doesn’t speak much English, so I try and help him out. He’s a great lad, and works really hard, so I’m really happy for him.”

On the youngsters impressing

“Some of the boys in the middle of the park and all over the pitch, the boys who came on, want to work hard.”
