Nunes | 'This is where I’m supposed to be'

Having avidly watched Sunderland as a child while growing up in Brazil, Matheus Nunes will be eagerly anticipating his first Premier League outing at Molineux against the Black Cat’s rivals Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

The Portugal international was thrust straight into the starting line-up for Wolves’ visit to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, before a home debut as the old gold beat Preston North End in the cup during midweek. But Nunes is looking forward to another match in front of his new supporters as the Magpies head to the West Midlands.

On his first game at Molineux

“It was nice to win for the first time and also the first time to play at Molineux. I felt for the first time the atmosphere that my teammates had been talking about. I was very thrilled to keep going and just to get better.

“Of course, I loved it. The atmosphere was already incredible, and I just want to play there every week and feel the fans and the support that they give us. It was unbelievable.

“I think we want to do well in every competition that we can. If the cup is one of them then of course we will try our best to get as far as we can get.”

On a Wolves debut at Spurs

“It wasn’t the result that I wanted, but it was perfect for me to play my first game at Tottenham. I couldn’t expect any more than just playing straight away at a great stadium.

“But I think we played very, very well. We had chances to score, we didn’t, but that’s part of football. I think it’s just a phase and it sometimes comes and sometimes doesn’t. We just have to keep working the way we have and the goals will come.

“For me, just to get through that game and see how I would get through it was good. The result wasn’t the best for us, but after the game I felt good as I knew that this is where I’m supposed to be.”

On adapting to the Premier League

“It was much faster [than Portuguese League]. Not only that game, but I think every game is the same. Everyone knows that I’ve watched the Premier League since I was a little kid because of my stepdad, and from what I’ve seen ages ago, the Premier League has always been like this.

“It’s very fast, fast counter attacks, very strong, very physical, so I didn’t get surprised by that, but of course it was different from Portugal.

“The players here are much stronger and bigger, taller, but not only that, they’re more aggressive too and get close to you a lot faster than in Portugal.”

On three big games ahead

“We need to win every game, particularly the next one. We need to think game by game and if we win the next game, we will then think about the one after that.

“Of course, we didn’t start the season the way we wanted, but we need to keep working the same that we have been working and the results will come because we have a lot of good players and a lot of quality, the coach has a lot of good ideas, and we just have to keep working.”

On supporting Sunderland as a child

“My stepdad is from Sunderland, so when I was growing up in Brazil, we would spend every Saturday or Sunday morning watching Sunderland’s matches.

“It would be in the mornings, because in Brazil, we were about four hours behind here in England, so in the weekend, every morning we would spend watching Sunderland on the TV.

“But it wasn’t only Sunderland, it would be all of the Premier League and the rest of the teams as well, so since I was a little kid, I have been watching Sunderland and the rest of the Premier League.”
