Doherty heaps praise on Portuguese pair

Matt Doherty admitted that Ruben Neves is one of the best strikers of a ball he has ever seen, after the Portuguese midfielder added yet another sumptuous goal to his Wolves collection.

Neves controlled a loose ball on his chest before emphatically volleying home from 20 yards to double Wolves' lead over Espanyol in the first leg of their Europa League last 32 tie on Thursday evening. Wolves went on to beat the Spaniards 4-0, with Doherty playing his part in an eye-catching third goal, setting up Diogo Jota for the second of Jota's three strikes on the night.

On Neves’ finish

“We have players in the team who can do that. He's done it before, and the way he shoots...I don't think I've ever seen somebody with the technique to be able to strike a ball on goal as well as he can.”

On another Jota treble

“It doesn't really matter who you're playing against, you still have to put the ball in the back of the net, and everybody knows that isn't that easy to do.

“I'm very happy for him. Fair play to him - he was in the right places at the right times and showed the composure to take his chances.”

On Wolves’ performance in general

“In the second-half we really seemed to turn it on, and 4-0 is probably a fair reflection of the game.

“It was the perfect night for us really, with the scoreline and not conceding as well. We said at half-time that it was really important to us to keep a clean sheet, and we managed to score four at the other end as well, so we're in a really strong position.

“The second leg now goes to the back of our minds for a while - we want to finish as high as we can in the league and see where that takes us, so now we'll focus on Norwich on Sunday.”
