Paul Lambert is not setting his side a limit on what can be achieved for the rest of the season.
Wolves are 16th in the Championship and are 13 points off the play-off places.
Lambert believes that although the team are playing well, he wants to take small steps to success.
“There’s no stipulation on ‘you must do this or that’. I know the long term project and the long term targets,” Lambert began.
“In the short-term it’s about getting as far up as we can.
“Whether that’s the play-offs (we’ll see), but as long as it’s viable then we’ll 100 per cent go for it and finish as high as we can.
“People have got to remember the way the season started, new owners, losing a manager, a new manager comes in and then he goes... so there’s been a wee bit of turnover.
“Fans are thinking ‘what’s going on’ and there’s been uncertainty, so we’re catching that up now.
“We’re probably behind the eight ball for a few months.
“Maybe now we’re starting to get something that we think can be really good, but it’s just a small step up so far.”
Wolves have kept three clean sheets in their last three games - against Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke and Aston Villa.
The Wolves boss has been impressed with how well his players are performing.
“I love watching them because they’re exciting,” Lambert exclaimed.
“We might not win every game but I love watching them play.
“I think the supporters are the same and the feeling between the two is really important, as I’ve said.
“There are a lot of games to go. I don’t know what’s around the corner – it’s a cliché but we take one game at a time.”
“At this moment they’re in a good place, defensively and offensively.
“Allied with the spirit they’ve got with each other and how close they seem to be and the supporters... it’s an accumulation of everything and a multitude of things that are going really well for us.
“Carl Ikeme’s at the top of his game as well, the lads at the back with Richard (Stearman) and Danny (Batth) or Mike Williamson and Kortney Hause, or Dominic Iorfa, or Conor Coady or Matt Doherty, it’s really strong at the back.
“That’s the secret of it.”
Paul Lambert continued by praising the form and captaincy of Danny Batth, who has featured 26 times for Wolves this season.
The Wolves boss believes that Batth has been on top of his game.
“Danny’s been great, every game he’s been huge for us,” he said.
“He’s not done too many things wrong. He’s only a young lad as well and he is the captain of the club which weighs on your shoulders.
“I’ve got nothing but praise for how he’s played.
“He’s not quiet, that’s for sure. His performances have been of a high standard, he lets himself be heard and he’s been on top of his game.
“It doesn’t give me too much concern if he’s come through the academy – the important thing is he’s a good player and he’s mentally strong.
“If they perform the way they have done then everybody becomes a captain.
“I look to everybody for responsibility.”
