Jed Wallace admits Wolves is a “good place to be at the moment” – as he targeted continual improvement to make himself a key part of Walter Zenga’s plans.
The affable midfielder produced one of his best performances in a Wolves shirt in Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Birmingham City, a result which extended the team’s unbeaten run to five games at the start of the season ahead of tonight’s EFL Cup tie with Cambridge United (7.45pm).
Ten of the eleven starters from Saturday were at Wolves last season, and taking that into account the team haven’t lost in eight, but Wallace knows it is very early days in such a competitive and high quality league.
“It is a great start for us so far,” said Wallace.
“But it is only a start
“Brighton got off to a flier last year and they got caught near the end.
“It is a great result but Saturday was only one result – even if it was a big result - and we are not getting carried away.
“It was brilliant for me to get 90 minutes in the game.
“I really want to make myself a good player here and improve on what I did last year.
“I think I played quite well, one of my better games for Wolves, and hopefully something to build on going into the future.
“It is a good place to be at the moment – we are enjoying it and are excited for what lies ahead.”
On the game itself, Wallace said: “It was a brilliant day
“I thought we had done well in the first half but didn’t take our chances and they too theirs very well.
“But the gaffer stayed positive at half time and gave is instructions to keep doing what we were doing.
“The first 15 minutes of the second half was as good as I have seen Wolves play for a long, long time and it was really enjoyable to be a part of.
“It was just a case of keeping going because we couldn’t keep missing those chances.
“We just bombarded them in that spell, got the goal and then got the second and never looked back.
“The two centre halves in the last half an hour were immense.
“A lot of balls went forward and they dealt with them all and set the tone for the rest of us to run around.
“The boys were buzzing after the game but not getting too carried away because we go onto the Cambridge game now.
“It is always good to get a win on the road, especially in a big derby, but now we have to go again.”
The post-match scenes at St Andrew’s were certainly memorable ones, as striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson led the squad and fans in the Icelandic Viking Clap made famous by his country during the summer’s European Championships.
Wallace loved it!
“I was saying to Pricey, Danny and Eddo after the game – people that have been here for years – that Jon has bowled in and within two weeks has got the place on toast!” he said.
“They were great scenes!
“Jon was immense on Saturday and what he does is always give us an outball.”
