Kenny Jackett felt Wolves defeat at Huddersfield this afternoon was a tough one to take after Nahki Wells’ late goal proved decisive.
The Terriers’ striker fired home from close range 11 minutes from time, just as Wolves had moved into the ascendancy at the John Smith’s Stadium.
And despite another late push where Joe Mason and Bjorn Sigurdarson were both denied by keeper Jed Steer, Wolves were unable to find an equaliser and have now gone six league games without a win.
“I felt we were unfortunate to get beaten today and didn’t deserve to lose,” said the Head Coach.
“It was a battle today – both sides had to play the conditions and it was a scrappy game.
“There was a strong wind coming down and we had to try and get through to half time and dominate in the second half.
“Huddersfield probably had the better of it in the first half but we defended well.
“And in that second half I felt we had the better of it and the better opportunities.
“We got on top of them and they couldn’t get out.
“But Nahki Wells needed one chance and he took it and that proved decisive and the key moment.
“Even at 1-0 down we got in twice on the keeper when he made a good save from Mason who had come in from the right and then on Sigurdarson on the edge of the box.
“Sigurdarson had also had a good shot saved earlier on which we couldn’t quite get the follow-up on as well.
“I was pleased with the effort and application of the players but it is about results and so it is disappointing.”
Jackett also explained the decision to switch back to 4-4-2 with Rajiv Van La Parra and Tommy Rowe either side of Conor Coady and George Saville.
“I think 4-4-2 suits the personnel we have as we have lost some strong 4-3-3 players” he said.
“And it suits the striker we have brought in as well.
“I felt Coady and Saville did well in midfield on and off the ball and we pressed and pressurised Huddersfield but were unable to find a goal.
“Results are the big thing and the bottom line and we didn’t get one today after a tight game so we are not happy with that.
“There are also circumstances, and effort and commitment from the players, and certain things we have to back.”
Wolves now head to Brentford on Tuesday night looking to bring the recent winless run to an end.
“It is not nice to lose but the effort and the application from the players was good on a tough day,” added Jackett.
“They have to keep working that way and we now have another game to come on Tuesday.
“We have to work hard – it will be the same group of players – and if they show the same attitude and spirit they will be on the right lines.”
