Paul Lambert tonight said he was full of praise for his players, despite the disappointment of defeat at the hands of Queens Park Rangers this afternoon.
Having taken ten points from the previous five games Wolves went into the game in confident mood, but, after Dave Edwards’ had levelled after Idrissa Sylla’s opener, Pawel Wszolek prodded home three minutes from time to give Rangers the points.
Amid his disappointment at the result, Wolves’ Head Coach believes his team produced another promising display going forward, and just lacked more of a finishing touch having had 20 shots on goal.
“I thought we were as good as we have played in my time here, and the second half was just relentless,” said Lambert.
“You could have taken away Carl Ikeme’s goal in the second half and just played in their half.
“We have come a long way from say five or six weeks ago when I think this team was all over the place.
“There is a way to get beat and I accept that but I am proud of how they played.
“We were playing against a deep-lying team which is fighting for their lives.
“They have been having a hard time and compliments to them for the result.
“From my own team I couldn’t have asked for any more.
“The only thing we were lacking was the finishing touch - that was missing today, but it hasn’t been missing lately.
“The build-up play and the domination of the ball was fantastic.
“I am pleased with the way we are playing and think we look a really good side.
“For the general game and the way we played I can have no complaints.
“We had 20 shots on goal and they have had five, and I think they have scored from the two on target.
“When you lose a game and think you weren’t quite at it then you have a go but I can’t do that today.”
There was a scrappy element to QPR’s winner, at a time when Wolves had been having all the play., but Lambert says sometimes that can happen in football.
He added: “I think luck has probably deserted QPR recently but they got a break of the ball in the penalty box for the second goal and got a wee ricochet from it and the lad has toe-poked it in.
“That can happen in football.
“It has a funny habit of knocking you when you play well or getting a result sometimes when you don’t.
“But now when people come and watch us I think they can see what we are trying to and that we are a good side.”
There is now a very quick turnaround to Monday’s trip to highflying Sheffield Wednesday (3pm), and Lambert admits he will assess the squad with the likelihood of making changes.
“We will need to look at it and make one or two changes here or there,” he said.
“We will check on them after and get them turned around and look at different options.
“It is impossible for everyone to go again after putting all that energy in today.
“It will be a different game and a tough game against a Sheffield Wednesday team which nearly made the Premier League last season.
“They got a good win at Newcastle recently and are a very good side.
“We just need to keep this level of performance and playing like that then the future will be good.
“We are a young side which is growing, and, regarding the way we played today, we were first class.
“We are only at the start of what we are trying to achieve but we are playing the way I want the lads to play.”
