Matt Doherty said he enjoyed the additional attacking responsibility in Saturday’s draw at Blackburn.
Doherty and fellow full back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson were both given license to get further forward to try and increase Wolves’ attacking options, and the Irishman produced an assist for Dave Edwards’ equalising goal and also went close to a winner in added time.
“We were able to push forward from full back,” said Doherty.
“I’m not sure we have done that before positionally even through my time at Wolves in terms of how far forward.
“At times we were almost in midfield, that is where Rob (Edwards) wanted us to be, and it was quite enjoyable.
“I ended up in the box a few times and hopefully in that position I can get on the end of things a bit more.
“The way he wants us to play is quite exciting and hopefully at home against Derby we can really show what we can do.”
Wolves created plenty of chances at Ewood Park, and many shots on goal, without being able to find any more than the one goal headed home by Dave Edwards.
And while results haven’t been great in recent weeks, Doherty believes performances have been better than those results suggest, and that it is about converting more of the opportunities created.
“The run of results we have been on has been terrible to be honest,” says Doherty.
“We got a draw at Blackburn which is an alright result but we were going for three points, albeit despite any lack of confidence from the run we have been on.
“Performances though have certainly not been terrible at all so confidence hasn’t been affected that much.
“We all knew what the gameplan was and tried to carry it out.
“I thought we maybe had chances to nick it on Saturday.
“I know they had chances at 1-0 and Lonners made a great save but we had some good chances in the first half.
“We dominated a lot of the second half and I think a draw was the least we deserved.
“I think we have been playing quite well at times and away from home we seem to be able to open teams up on the counter attack.
“But we just haven’t been taking any chances.
“We could have scored two or three in the first half alone at Blackburn.
“When that comes I think we will start winning games.
“I don’t think it comes down to luck – more just the concentration and the belief that you are going to score.
“Eddo seems to get on the end of things and score goals – we just need to believe in front of goals.
“It was the same as with Norwich with Eddo getting on the end of my cross.
“You always know he is a threat in the box and he is always lurking to get on the end of things.
“He also got close from a couple of set pieces as well.
“I got in there at the end and hit it wide as well.
“It just shows the intent we had going into the last seconds of the game – we were trying to win it.”
