Conor Coady heads for his latest reunion with Huddersfield Town citing morale and confidence as key ingredients of Wolves’ early season promise.
Coady, who captained the side in Tuesday’s EFL Cup win against Cambridge with Danny Batth rested, says the squad are enjoying their football after an impressive start to the campaign thus far.
But he knows this is the biggest test yet against a Huddersfield side who have made their own flying start.
“This is a massive game for us,” says Coady.
“Everyone came in after the win on Tuesday night and straightaway it was thinking about focusing on this next game.
“If we can go into the international break and be maybe up towards the top of the table would be great for everyone.
“Hopefully we can go there and get the job done.
“We need to keep the momentum going.
“The start has been good but the focus is on in training and we are learning from the gaffer each and every day – long may it continue.
“We know we have got good players here and fantastic players coming in.
“Everyone has got to keep their standards to keep up with the calibre of players coming in and the boys have done that up to now.
“The team spirit is superb and the gaffer has brought that in to everybody.
Everyone is going onto the pitch and backing each other up.
“We have to keep things going, we can’t slacken off and lose any concentration.
“We want to do good things this season under this gaffer and hopefully we can do that.
“I think morale and confidence is the most important thing you can have in football.
“You could see after the game at Birmingham last weekend how much everyone loved the victory whether they had started the game, been on the bench or come on for the last few minutes.
“Everyone was together and it was a massive result for us.
“But we can’t lose concentration after that – we want to do big things and to do that we need everyone on board and going in the right direction.
“The gaffer has been fantastic – he has spoken to everyone and told them what he wants from them.
“The boys have responded, and the attention to detail has been great.”
Coady has been thrilled by two particular events over the last week.
The scenes at full time at St Andrew’s – including the Icelandic Viking Thunder Clap – and then being asked to captain the side at Molineux.
“Full time at St Andrew’s was one of the best feelings I have had on a football pitch,” he said.
“To go there, which is a difficult place to go, and come away with a 3-1 win.
“To play how we did, and score the goals we did, was great.
“And then to captain a club like Wolves is very very special.
“I have always wanted to do it and to do it at Molineux was extra special.
“The most important thing was that we got the win but it was a special night for me and my family.”
Now then all roads lead to Huddersfield, and Coady returning to the place where he spent a hugely enjoyable season, making 48 appearances and scoring three goals in 2014/15.
And he will be hoping for a more positive return that that which came with last season’s 1-0 defeat.
“It was disappointing for us at Huddersfield last year and we didn’t put on a good performance,” he recalls.
“This is a huge game and it would be nice for me personally if we can get the result.
“I still speak to a lot of the lads there – they have brought in some good players and have got strength in depth now.
“It is a great club with great people but we are going there to try and win this weekend.
“I will speak to the lads afterwards but during the game it is very much down to business.
“They are having a good go and have started the season well.
“They are top of the league and it is up to us to go up there and try and knock them off.
“We will have great backing again and it is everything for the lads to have the support that we have from the fans.
“You go out and hear the singing and it gives you everything and drives you on and helps you as a player.
“If you listen to that it backs you up and gives you that extra ten per cent.
“Last week they were amazing and we need them more than ever on Saturday.”
