Danny Batth felt Wolves were more than good value for their point at league leaders Burnley – and says that has to be the standard set for performances in the future.
The skipper was Wolves’ point-saver at Turf Moor with an injury time header in front of a delighted away following, but it was nothing more than the team deserved after an impressive performance which brought Burnley’s winning run to an end.
Wolves restricted Burnley to very few clear-cut chances aside from Sam Vokes’ impressive header, and dominated for a good chunk of the second half prior to the hosts’ breakthrough.
“We knew going into the game that Burnley were going strongly at the top of the league,” said Batth.
“That is the benchmark for any team in the division.
“We knew it would be a tough game as they are flying at the moment, are very solid and have some prolific strikers.
“I said in the huddle before the game that the longer we could frustrate them the more chance we would have of getting a result.
“It is getting to that stage of the season for those teams at the top that it might get difficult to get the three points at home when the supporters are on the edge of their seats.
“There was a 15-20 minutes period when they were strong but we rode our luck and then really established ourselves in the game.
“Sav had a chance in the first half that was cleared from in front of the line, Zyro had a header in the box and Pricey hit the post.
“I think we fully merited the point.
“If we look back at the Blues game we took a lot of confidence from it.
“It was a difficult game but we got a point and were resolute again at Burnley and it took a really good header to get past us.
“We have shown this season we can get results against the top teams but we haven’t been consistent.
“We have to find the middle ground, and establish a consistent performance level like we did against Burnley.
“We are a young side which is developing every game and showing character.”
It was a timely intervention from Batth to pop up and earn Wolves a point, from a pinpoint corner from Nathan Byrne.
“It was obviously nice to get the goal,” he said.
“Nathan hung the corner up and I got it in my eyeline and threw everything at it.
“It was nice that it was in front of our supporters and I was very proud to get the goal but the point was the most important thing.
“It was a good performance from the lads and we can take a lot of spirit and confidence from it.”
Amid an impressive all-round performance from Wolves there was also praise reserved for Price in midfield, and the returning Jed Wallace, unfortunate to pick up a thigh strain towards the end of an impressive first start since his Millwall loan.
“Pricey’s attitude and workrate has been phenomenal since he has been playing,” said Batth.
“Whenever he is in the team he wears his heart on his sleeve.
“He might not be the biggest but he has certainly has one of the biggest hearts.
“He is a great lad around the place and I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“Jed is another young player making his way – he has come back from Millwall and did really well on Saturday.
“He made some good runs and got plenty of crosses in the box and was unfortunate not to come away with either a goal or an assist.”
