Lonwijk signs new deal ahead of Luton loan

Defender Nigel Lonwijk has signed a new Wolves contract ahead of spending the 2025/26 season on loan in League One with Luton Town.

The 22-year-old heads out on his sixth loan away from Molineux and returns for a third successive season in the third tier of English football, having previously spent time in the division with Huddersfield Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle.

Lonwijk claimed the League One title with Argyle during the 2022/23 season, in which the centre-back played 41 times on his way to becoming a champion.

The former Dutch youth international has also gained experience on the continent during his time as a Wolves player, with loan spells at Fortuna Sittard back in his home country, as well as Grasshopper Club Zurich, either side of his stint at Home Park.

During second half of the 2023/24 season, Lonwijk was back in League One for a stint with Wycombe, which saw him play 11 times for the Chairboys, including a 90-minute appearance in the Bristol Street Motors final, and score two goals – one of which won the club’s Goal of the Season award.

Another successful spell in the division followed for Lonwijk last term as he turned out 26 times in all competitions for Huddersfield, until a hamstring injury sustained in early March cut his season short.

After now signing a one-year contract extension with Wolves this summer, Lonwijk will spend the next 12 months in Bedfordshire as he joins a Luton side looking to bounce back following their relegation from the Championship.

Everyone at Wolves wishes Nigel the best of luck for his upcoming season at Kenilworth Road.
