A record number of almost 250 participants braved the elements to take part in the seventh annual Molineux Sleepout, raising funds for Wolves Foundation and the Good Shepherd.
Despite the arrival of Storm Claudia, with strong winds and driving rain, the group of Wolves fans, city residents, local dignitaries and businesses and Foundation Pack Patrons bedded down in the Stan Cullis Stand to support projects helping people experiencing homelessness and hardship across the local community.
The record number of participants now means that 1,000 people have taken part in the event since its launch in 2019, and the current fundraising, just short of £50,000, makes it over £300,000 raised over the last seven years.
Hosted by Foundation ambassador and Sky Sports presenter Johnny Phillips, the on-stage element of the Sleepout featured a series of inspiring speeches, including from Euston and Vicky, who have benefitted from the work of the two charities.
Also featuring, and making her Sleepout debut alongside husband James, was legendary singer/songwriter Beverley Knight, who was joined on stage by fellow top musician and Good Shepherd ambassador Jaki Graham.
“Wolverhampton is my home, and to see the goodness that comes out, and how people out themselves out, to do things for others, is extraordinary,” said Beverley.
“I just wanted to put myself forward as part of that number, and I couldn’t be prouder to stand as one of the 250 people braving the weather to not only foster a community spirit among themselves, but raise funds for Wolves Foundation and the Good Shepherd.”
The Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Craig Collingswood, officially opened the event, whilst Wolverhampton West MP Warinder Juss also spoke about his pride in the fundraising efforts of the people of the city.
Wolves director John Bowater once again took part in the Sleepout, as did Foundation ambassador Mitch Lane, with other guests including Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara, former player and now Academy staff member Claire Hakeman and Good Shepherd ambassador Natalie Graham.
Will Clowes, director of Wolves Foundation, said: “It was another incredible Molineux Sleepout and we continue to be blown away by the support we receive.
“Our seventh Sleepout brought a record breaking attendance and means we’ve now gone past 1000 participants taking part over the last seven years.
“Thanks again to all who braved the elements as well as those who made a donation to support work having a real impact in our city.”
Tom Hayden, CEO of the Good Shepherd added: “We remain extremely grateful to be involved in the Sleepout are incredibly thankful to everyone who took part, whether in the Stan Cullis Stand or virtually.
“Your support ensures we can continue delivering life-changing initiatives across Wolverhampton.”
The Foundation would also like to thank Wolves’ hospitality providers Levy UK for the donation of warm drinks, Pukka Pies for supplying pies for all participants and Bostin Coffee for a supply of chocolate. Also, to Wolves’ Stadium team for their support in the build-up and the team of stewards who attended on the night.
