Preview | Wolves vs Aston Villa

It’s Aston Villa under the Molineux lights next up for Wolves. Below is all you need to know before the Premier League’s Friday night football.

1 | Roll Call

Wolves will be without Ladislav Krejci, who misses the game through suspension after his red card last weekend. Toti returned to the bench after two months out last weekend, so may replace the Czech, while David Moller Wolfe came on at left centre back at Selhurst Park, so is another option. Hee Chan Hwang returned to training this week, and while the Villa fixture may come too soon, Rob Edwards is hopeful the South Korean could return next week.

Unai Emery will welcome Alysson back into his squad. The January signing has played just 16 minutes so far this season but has returned to training this week and is expected to travel. Midfield trio of John McGinn, Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara are all out in the long-term, while Harvey Elliott is a fresh injury concern. Goalkeeper Marco Bizot returns from suspension, having been sent off in the Emirates FA Cup recently.

3 | Journey to Friday

Last Sunday in the capital left a feeling of regret for Wolves, who played some brilliant football in the first half, but failed to capitalise, allowing Crystal Palace to win the game late after Tolu Arokodare’s missed penalty and a Ladislav Krejci red card. That 1-0 loss came after a dramatic comeback against Arsenal, when Edwards’ side came from two goals down to earn a point through Hugo Bueno and Tom Edozie goals. The Old Gold have been a mixed bag, with defeats to Chelsea and Bournemouth standing alongside a win over West Ham United and draw with Newcastle United in 2026.

A late Tammy Abraham strike saved Aston Villa a point against Leeds United last weekend. Unai Emery’s side have struggled for consistently during the month of February, which has seen the chasing pace shorten the gap in the race for Champions League football. Villa were beaten by 10-man Brentford at the start of the month, before picking up a point at Bournemouth. A late own goal earned them victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Villa Park, where Newcastle United won in the FA Cup a fortnight ago.

4 | A classic Molineux evening

Wolves truly gained momentum for their 2017/18 Championship title charge with a victory over Villa under the Molineux lights in the October.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side dominated before the break, without finding the breakthrough, but Diogo Jota lit the touchpaper when he left Ahmed Elmohamady on the floor and rifled the opening goal into the roof of the net, beyond Sam Johnstone in goal.

Jota was behind the second goal too, leading a counter attack which finished with Leo Bonatini firing home the second goal from a tight angle to send the Old Gold top of the Championship.

Wolves | Ruddy, Doherty, Batth, Coady, Miranda, Douglas, Saiss, Neves (N’Diaye 79), Costa (Bonatini 45), Cavaleiro (Marshall 73), Jota.

Villa | Johnstone, Elmohamady, Chester, Terry, Hutton, Whelan, Hourihane, Snodgrass, Kodjia (O’Hare 79), Adomah (Onomah 73), Hogan (Davis 64).
