Preview | Liverpool vs Wolves

Premier League football returns after Christmas with a trip to Liverpool for Wolves and here's all you need to know before Saturday's clash.

1 | Roll Call

Hugo Bueno returned to training this week and will be assessed closer to the game to see if he can feature. Captain Toti is out for a “significant period” according to Rob Edwards however, with the defender picking up a hamstring injury. Rodrigo Gomes, Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde remain absent through injury, while Emmanuel Agbadou and Tawanda Chirewa are at AFCON.

Liverpool will be without record signing Alexander Isak, who fractured his fibula after scoring in Saturday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur. He’s out long-term, having been operated on earlier this week. Dominik Szoboszlai is also absent, after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the same game. Both Conor Bradley and Cody Gakpo are considered 50-50 by Liverpool manager Arne Slot, but he’s definitely without Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo. Florian Wirtz is available having come off with cramp at the weekend, while Mohamed Salah is away at AFCON.

3 | Journey to Saturday

Wolves suffered the familiar feeling of defeat in their final game before Christmas against Brentford. Like all of the Old Gold’s games under Edwards, they were level and in the game at the break, but two second half goals without reply from the Bees did the damage. When preparing for Liverpool, the head coach will be holding on to the improved performances away from home under him. Wolves deserved something at Villa Park, and it was a last-minute own goal which denied them a point at leaders Arsenal a fortnight ago. With two away games in the space of four days, he’ll hope to build on those two performances.

Liverpool’s results have improved in recent weeks, and they go into Saturday’s game on the back of three straight wins. Last time out they squeezed past Tottenham, with Spurs finishing the match with nine men. At Anfield a fortnight ago Brighton & Hove Albion were beaten 2-0, while the Reds also won at Inter Milan in the Champions League. Prior to that, draws with Sunderland and Leeds United left Liverpool fans frustrated, but their return to form is timely ahead of a busy Christmas schedule.

4 | Emphatic Molineux win

The Old Gold’s last victory over Liverpool came in February 2023, as Julen Lopetegui masterminded a 3-0 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side at Molineux.

The Spaniard’s influence was starting to show at Molineux and Hee Chan Hwang’s early cross was turned into his own net by Joel Matip. Craig Dawson then drove in the second after a scramble inside the Liverpool half.

Having soaked up the away side's rally after the break, Wolves sealed the win on the break, as Adama Traore carried his side up the pitch and Ruben Neves produced a composed finish in front of the South Bank to seal the win.
