Preview | Wolves vs Nottingham Forest

Rob Edwards will be hoping to take the positives from Sunday’s Aston Villa performance into Wednesday night’s Nottingham Forest clash, and here’s all you need to know pre-match.

1 | Roll Call

Edwards reported mixed news on the injury front on Tuesday afternoon. Toti and Joao Gomes have no lasting effects from knocks on Sunday, meaning they’re fit to face Forest. Ladislav Krejci was back on the grass on Tuesday, but didn’t train with the group, so won’t be fit but isn’t expected to be far off. Matt Doherty trained with the group again and, while unlikely to start, will be assessed about a place in the squad. Rodrigo Gomes continues his absence following groin surgery.

Sean Dyche has been handed a double injury boost, with Murillo and Morgan Gibbs-White due to be available on Wednesday evening. Murillo missed Sunday’s defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion due to injury, and has also been suffering with flu, but is expected to travel. Gibbs-White missed the Malmo game and was withdrawn against the Seagulls with a knock, but it won’t keep him out. Taiwo Awoniyi, Chris Wood and Douglas Luiz remain out with more long-term issues. Dilane Bakwa and Oleksandr Zinchenko have both returned to training, but the fixture will come too soon.

3 | Route to Wednesday

The signs of Edwards’ work are showing on Wolves, even if the results aren’t following. Sunday’s showing at Villa Park was the Old Gold’s best for some time, but Emiliano Martinez, the woodwork and offside flag all denied them something from the game. The eventual 1-0 defeat was tough to take, particularly after the Crystal Palace defeat, following another improved display. However, Wolves will feel that first Premier League win of the season is nearing, with back-to-back Molineux fixtures presenting a real opportunity. After a November to forget, Wednesday’s clash offers new hope for the Old Gold.

They face a Forest side who were beaten 2-0 at home to Brighton on Sunday. The reverse, courtesy of late goals in each half from the Seagulls, was Forest’s first defeat in six after a turnaround in fortunes under Dyche, their third manager of the season. Previously, Forest had beaten Malmo in the Europa League and both Leeds United and Liverpool in the Premier League, with that impressive 3-0 win at Anfield being their last outing away from the City Ground. The run prior to the Brighton loss saw Forest rise above the relegation zone, one point ahead of Leeds United in 18th.

4 | On the road to the title

The ‘Class of ‘09’ often cite a 5-1 win over Forest in the August of their title-winning season as a sign that they were on to something special. The Old Gold trashed Forest to move top of the league, with Michael Kightly hitting two stunners in the impressive win.

David Jones fired Wolves ahead after 14 minutes, before a Wes Morgan own goal doubled the lead. Kightly’s first was smashed in from 25 yards out and Chris Iwelumo headed home a fourth before the break.

Richard Stearman’s own goal was nothing more than a consolation for Forest, who conceded a fifth when Kightly curled home impressively.
