Dissecting some of most important Wolves goals under the ownership of Fosun which, although they’re not known as Goal of the Season contenders, were hugely significant in the club’s recent history.
Newcastle United 1-2 Wolves | 9th December 2018
One of Matt Doherty’s greatest moments in a Wolves shirt arrived in stoppage time on Sunday 9th December, with the Old Gold tied with Newcastle United.
Riding the crest of the wave following promotion, Wolves were gutsy under Nuno Espirito Santo, and as Diogo Jota’s effort was parried into the path of Doherty, the Irishman nodded in an invaluable late winner to move his side into the top half of the Premier League table.
“Obviously, it feels sweet coming away from home, on TV, in a game like this, and scoring with almost the last kick of the game. It gives them no chance really to get back in it. It’s pretty special.” Matt Doherty
“We must be proud because one thing we didn’t abandon was that we stayed with the game. We stayed with our attacks, we stayed compact, we stayed organised like a team. We win but the win cannot disguise things we must improve. No matter who we play, we always must maintain our standards, but we are improving, we are managing better and we stayed with our tasks.” Nuno Espirito Santo
The lasting impression
That victory came early in a positive run of form which put Wolves in content for European football – a target they ultimately achieved by finishing seventh come May. Newcastle heads were above water even after the late goal and Rafa Benitez eventually led the Magpies to safety in comfortable fashion.
