Iconic Moments | Ruben Neves

During the glittering Wolves career of Ruben Neves, the Portuguese has lit up Molineux and away grounds across the country, and courtesy of Royal Caribbean, sits down to discuss his top 15 goals for the club.

The Wolves skipper was joined by former teammate Dave Edwards to rewatch some of his most iconic goals in old gold at Compton Park, for a feature now live on Wolves’ official YouTube channel.

Hull City 2-3 Wolves | 15th August 2017

“It was a really good feeling to score my first goal in England. It was really good.”

Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Wolves | 15th December 2017

“Normally the goalkeepers are waiting for me to smash the ball into the net. You make decisions on the pitch in a second, and my decision in that moment was to pass the ball into the goal.”

Wolves 3-0 Sheffield United | 3rd February 2018

“This was my first goal at Molineux. I was asking for the ball from Ivan [Cavaleiro] and he didn’t want to pass me the ball, but fortunately the defender did his job.”

Wolves 2-0 Derby County | 11th April 2018

“I didn’t even know how to celebrate. I just knew I couldn’t lose the ball; the pressure was coming. I remember I celebrated to my wife and at the end of the game she told me she was inside.”

Wolves 2-1 Liverpool | 7th January 2019

“It was really special. I think we felt it in this game, the energy from the fans, I think we felt we could do something special in the cup. This was a fantastic game, a fantastic atmosphere.”

Wolves 3-1 Arsenal | 24th April 2019

“Normally I don’t take free-kicks like this, but I remember I was not being effective on free-kicks at that time and tried something different. So, I trained a lot on this kind of kick, and it went really well.”

Wolves 1-1 Manchester United | 19th August 2019

“The first touch was not great, so I just needed to be so quick on the second touch and the third one I was seeing four Man United players running to me. It’s one of my favourite goals.”

Wolves 2-1 Aston Villa | 10th November 2019

“Jota blocks the only player that can come to me. We worked that during the week, we knew they left a lot of space outside of the box, so as soon as the referee whistled for the free-kick, we knew what we had to do.”

Wolves 4-0 Espanyol | 20th February 2020

“A Europa League game – it was a fantastic moment for the club to play European football and this was a special one. I started doing this [celebration] because of Pirlo. He’s one of my favourite players, of course.”

Aston Villa 2-3 Wolves | 16th October 2021

“Losing 2-0, winning 3-2 last minute against Villa away. It’s amazing.”

Wolves 2-1 Leicester City | 20th February 2022

“I was not expecting this one to go in, to be honest. I think there was a lot of people in front of him [Kasper Schmeichel].

Wolves 4-0 Watford | 10th March 2022

“It’s something I really like to do in training sessions [chips], mainly when we are doing small-sided games. It’s something that works really well – the goalkeeper is always trying to cover the first post and if the ball goes well, it’s really hard for them. Because I tried it a lot in training, I was confident to do that.”

Wolves 1-1 Newcastle United | 28th August 2022

“It’s a bit different from the other ones – stronger, harder.”

Brentford 1-1 Wolves | 29th October 2022

“It was really important for us. We were losing and it was straight after their goal, I think. It was a great reaction for us, playing away at Brentford who were doing a fantastic season.”

Wolves 3-0 Liverpool | 4th February 2023

“It was a different one. Counter attack, I saw the space and I knew Adama would win the race because he’s so quick. He waited for the right moment to pass and the first touch was really important for the goal.”
