Defining Moments | Yerson Mosquera

Charting the key moments in Yerson Mosquera's career which made him the player he is today.

Senior debut

28th October 2020 | Atletico Nacional 1-1 River Plate

Mosquera had only been a senior professional for less than a year before he moved to Wolves in the summer of 2021, having made quick progression at Atletico Nacional in his homeland, where he became the breakout star of the Colombian top flight throughout the 2020 season. After featuring in the Florida Cup, the defender’s first competitive senior appearance for the club came in the Copa Sudamericana against Argentinian giants River Plate. As his team tried to make it out of the second round, the Colombian had a debut to forget when he was dismissed on the stroke of half-time.

First goal

12th November 2020 | Alianza FC 2-3 Atletico Nacional

Despite his red card on debut, Mosquera’s coaches were not deterred, and the centre-back was soon back in the team for the rest of the league campaign. As well as putting in impressive performances in defence to help secure victories over CD America, Rionegro Aguila and Deportivo Pasto, he was firing at the both ends of the pitch to help Nacional secure league victory over Alianza FC with the first goal of his career. Mosquera equalised for his team on 35 minutes when he latched onto Brayan Rovira’s cross, before his side went on to claim all three points in the second minute of added time.

First trophy

30th September 2023 | Toronto FC 2-3 FC Cincinnati

Mosquera’s displays during the first half of 2021 saw him brought into Molineux, but injuries ravaged his first few years in gold and black. Aiming to get regular games under his belt, Mosquera headed on loan to the MLS, joining FC Cincinnati for the 2023 season. His time in the MLS was transformative for the centre-back as he became a key man in the team’s defence, with his loan extended until the end of a year which ended up with Mosquera lifting the MLS Supporters Shield – which is won by the team topping the league standings at the end of the regular season – following a 3-2 win over Toronto FC in September.

International debut

12th October 2023 | Colombia 2-2 Uruguay

Just two weeks after lifting the first trophy of his career, Mosquera was handed one of the biggest honours for a professional footballer, as he made his international debut. Having represented Colombia at under-18 and under-20 level before his move to Wolves, the defender was brought off the bench for the closing minutes of his country’s 2-2 World Cup qualification clash at home to Uruguay. Coming on for the final few moments, Mosquera joined former Wolves teammate Jhon Arias, earning the first of his four caps, which also included a debut international goal a year later.

Premier League debut

17th August 2024 | Arsenal 2-0 Wolves

Four years after signing for Wolves and following his impressive loan stints with Cincinnati and Villarreal, Mosquera finally made his long-awaited Premier League debut when the Old Gold travelled to Arsenal on the opening day of the 2024/25 season. Despite Wolves falling to a 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium, Mosquera shone at the back as he showcased his defensive talents as well as his ability to wind up opposing forwards. However, an ACL injury in just his fifth match meant his season was over early. He returned from injury at the start of this campaign and has since added another dozen top flight games to his tally.
