Play/Delete/Rewind | Andy Thompson

As a member of the Wolves Hall of Fame, Andy Thompson played more than 450 matches for Wolves, but here he has the chance to go over those games and rewrite his gold and black history.

PLAY | The game you missed

I didn’t play the second leg against Crystal Palace in 1997 when we lost in the play-offs. I played the first leg at Selhurst Park, but I didn’t play in the return leg at Molineux and unfortunately, we went out when we really could have pushed for promotion that season.

DELETE | The game you would remove

There’s a couple, but when I first came to the club from West Brom, we didn’t get off to the best of starts and we lost the first three games all 3-0. I suppose it didn’t give a great impression of myself coming to the club at that time. I know things weren’t great anyway, but just the climate with everything that was happening at that time and where we were, it would’ve been nice to get off on a winning start on your debut.

REPLAY | The game with a different outcome

In another play-off game, we played against Bolton in 1995. In the home leg, we did really well and it should have been dead and buried before the second leg, as we should have scored four or five that game, but only got the two. Jason McAteer scored a goal which kept them in the tie and when we went to Burnden Park, we ended up losing 2-0 with John McGinlay scoring both of them, although he shouldn’t have been on the pitch. That’s the one game I wish we’d have got a different result.

REWIND | The game with the same outcome

It’s got to be the Sherpa Van final. With all the fans there, we got a great result, and that was just the cherry on top after getting promotion. It was great to have done a double that year. It’s by far my favourite game as a Wolves player, just because of the atmosphere and the whole day itself, playing in front of 50,000 Wolves supporters and lifting a trophy. It doesn’t get much better than that game.

FAST-FORWARD | The game since you left the club

I would’ve liked to have played in the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park in 1998 when we lost 1-0 to Arsenal. It was not long after I left, and I actually went to the game to watch it as a fan, and it was interesting to see the subs that were on the bench that day; Bully was on the bench, Robbie Keane was on the bench, and we had an opportunity there to get to a cup final, but unfortunately, we didn’t manage it. It would’ve been nice to have contributed something to that one.
