Rob Edwards joins the Old Gold Club

Current under-23 head coach and former Wolves defender Rob Edwards will be in the Old Gold Club hot seat this evening as the latest inductee on the popular podcast.

Edwards, who also temporarily took charge of the first-team between the management spells of Walter Zenga and Paul Lambert, is set to become the 20th inductee when he appears as the special guest on this week’s episode.

The Telford-born Welsh international will discuss joining Wolves following relegation from the Premier League in 2004, before going on to make more than 110 appearances in gold and black when he joins regular hosts Mikey Burrows and Chris Iwelumo.

Edwards’ episode of the Old Gold Club, sponsored by Wolverhampton Building Supplies, will be broadcast during a half hour Facebook and YouTube video on Wednesday evening at 6pm, before an extended podcast is released on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and all other podcast apps.

As the latest inductee, the 36-year-old – who scored his one and only goal for the club in a 4-2 home defeat to Stoke City in February 2008 – will recount the four seasons he spent at Molineux as a player, many of which were hampered by injuries.

Edwards first made the short journey to Molineux from Aston Villa in July 2004, with the defender becoming a regular member of Mick McCarthy’s Championship side between 2005 and 2007, before suffering a knee injury which kept him out of the play-offs that year.

After recovering, Edwards played 12 more games for Wolves, before leaving the club in the summer of 2008, joining Blackpool before the start of the following season.

Edwards returned to Wolves as the under-18s coach after retiring from football in October 2013 at the young age of 30. His season in charge of the under-18s was a successful one, leading to a promotion to first-team coach in the summer of 2015, where he remained until the end of the season when he departed the club with Lambert.

Following a short stint as AFC Telford United boss, Edwards re-joined Wolves in July 2018 to lead the club’s under-23s who are currently fighting for promotion from the Premier League 2 Division 2, and have made it through to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup.

The latest Old Gold Club will be broadcast on Facebook and YouTube from 6pm this evening, while the full podcast will be available on all the regular channels afterwards.
