The March Edition of Wolves' History

25th March 1893: Wolves win FA Cup for the first time

Wolves won the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history on the 25th of March 1893 after finishing as runners up in the competition in the 1888/1889 season. Following wins against Bolton Wanderers, Middlesborough, Darwen, and Blackburn Rovers en route to the final, Wolves met Everton at Fallowfield Stadium in Manchester in front of an estimated 60,000 fans. Wolves would go on to win the game 1-0, with a goal from captain Harry Allen separating the sides. This was the first major piece of silverware the club won.

2nd March 1960: Wolves lose 9-2 on aggregate to Barcelona in the European Cup

Following a trip to the Camp Nou on the 10th of February 1960, Wolves welcomed visitors Barcelona to Molineux for the quarter final of the 1959/1960 European Cup. Barcelona led 4-0 on aggregate following the first leg, and although the tie finished 9-2 on aggregate, Wolves gave the almost 56,000-strong crowd two consolation goals in the second leg at Molineux.

2nd March 1974: Wolves win first League Cup

On the 2nd of March 1974, in front of almost 98,000 fans, Wolves beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley to win their first League Cup. John Richards scored the winner for Wolves in the eighty-fifth minute. However, goalkeeper Gary Pierce was forced into action to make several key saves for Wolves. Ultimately though, the win went to the better side on the day and Wolves deserved their first success in the competition.

21st March 1992: Steve Bull breaks Wolves’ goal scoring record

In only his sixth season at the club Steve Bull wrote his name into Wolves’ history books on the 21st of March 1992. Bully scored his 195th goal for Wolves, breaking the previous goalscoring record for the club of 194 goals, held by John Richards. Bull scored the winner in a 2-1 victory against Derby County. Bull would go onto score another 111 goals in his remaining years at the club, taking him to an extraordinary total of 306 goals for Wolves.
