Gomes and Cunha pick up Player of the Season awards

Joao Gomes and Matheus Cunha’s impressive seasons in gold and black have seen the Brazilian duo honoured with Wolves’ 2024/25 Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Season awards.

There were also prizes for Pablo Sarabia, Tammi George, Charlotte Greengrass and Anna Morphet given out this season as the achievements of both the men’s and women’s teams have been celebrated.

Taking part in a vote exclusive to the Wolves App, supporters chose Gomes as their men’s Player of the Season following an incredibly consistent campaign for the 24-year-old, who enjoyed one of the best years of his career in the centre of Vitor Pereira’s midfield.

The Brazilian international played a pivotal role in helping to extend Wolves’ time in the Premier Leaguer to an eighth successive season. As well as being in the top five players in the Premier League for tackles made during 2024/25, Gomes also produced the best goalscoring season of his career, having found the net four times in all competitions.

Gomes received an overwhelming 40 per cent of the public vote, taking the supporters’ award ahead of his international teammates Andre (15%) and Cunha (13.7%), who finished in second and third respectively.

A different Brazilian was selected as this year’s Players’ Player of the Season, as Cunha received the accolades from his teammates after the forward found the back of the net 17 times during the 2024/25 season.

Cunha has recorded the greatest goalscoring campaign of his career over the last 12 months and became the first Wolves player to hit 15 Premier League goals in a season since Raul Jimenez back in 2019/20.

Supporters also had the chance to vote for the men’s Goal of the Season award on the Wolves App, and although Cunha saw six of his strikes in the running, it was Sarabia who claimed the prize for the second successive season.

After his finish against Tottenham Hotspur won the 2023/24 title, he made it two on the bounce thanks to his stunning free-kick against Manchester United at Old Trafford in April, which helped Wolves claim a fifth win in succession in the Premier League for the first time ever.

The former Real Madrid and PSG forward picked up 29.3% of the vote to overcome the tough challenge of Cunha and his incredible efforts against AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup (17%) – which has already been named that competition’s best goal this season – and his Olimpico finish at home to Man United direct from a corner (13.5%), as well as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s long-range bullet away at Nottingham Forest in August (10.4%).

After being voted women’s Supporters’ Player of the Season for the past two seasons, George made it a hat-trick of titles following another stand-out campaign for Dan McNamara’s side.

The dynamic midfielder came out on top of another battle with several of her teammates to claim the prize, in a season where she once again found the net 11 times in 30 appearances in all competitions – including a goal of the season contender.

George received 32.5% of the Wolves App vote, finishing as champion ahead of second-place Beth Merrick (15.6%) and Charlotte Greengrass in third (12.8%)

As with the men’s vote, third place with supporters was the winner with their teammates as Greengrass claimed the Players’ Player of the Season award following a brilliant first year in gold and black which saw the former Nottingham Forest forward take the FAWNL Northern Premier Division’s Golden Boot.

Although she took a bit of time to get up and running in the league this season, Greengrass finished the campaign in stunning fashion, with her hat-trick in the penultimate game of the season – a 6-1 win away at Halifax – pushing her one ahead of teammate Amber Hughes in the top scorer charts, before confirming the goalscoring title with her 32nd finish of the season on the final day.

The tightest public vote came in the women’s Goal of the Season contest as just a single vote saw Morphet’s long-range free-kick against Liverpool Feds on the final game of the season earn the Wolves Women captain the award.

With her team already two goals ahead, the skipper stepped up from 30 yards and sent an absolute rocket of a set-piece into the top left-hand corner of the goal, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Morphet was selected by 22.7% of the Wolves App vote, finished ahead of Beth Merrick’s finish against West Bromwich Albion (22.3%) and George’s long-range effort against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup (16.9%).

Trophies have also been given out for the PFA Community Champions this week as Rodrigo Gomes and Anna Morphet were celebrated by Wolves Foundation following their work off the pitch during the last year, as the pair helped to make a remarkable difference in the local area.

Sunday’s Premier League match against Brentford will give Wolves supporters a final chance to show their gratitude for Pereira’s men’s squad this season as they take part in a lap of appreciation immediately after the final whistle.

Supporters are asked to please remain in their seats after the final whistle as Pereira’s group undertake the traditional lap around Molineux with their families, following a campaign which improved significantly since the head coach arrived.
