1974 souvenir programme on sale

A souvenir edition of the official matchday programme has been created to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Wolves’ historic League Cup win over Manchester City in 1974.

That victory at Wembley saw Wolves lift the League Cup for the first time, thanks to goals from Kenny Hibbitt and John Richards, who both speak exclusively to a bumper edition of the matchday programme.

Although Richards is unavailable to attend due to prior commitments, Hibbitt will be joined by seven other Old Gold heroes from that day at Molineux on Saturday and they’ll be appreciated when they take to the pitch at half-time.

As part of the celebrations, Richards has penned a column in the programme, while Hibbitt, Geoff Palmer and John McAlle provide a detailed journey through events from that March afternoon 50 years ago.

Inside the programme, Palmer said: “They are just great memories. I was at Wolves’ game at Tottenham recently, and even there, a few of the fans stopped me to say what a great weekend they had at Wembley 50 years ago.

“It’s fantastic that Wolves fans still appreciate the successes we enjoyed together all those years ago and is particularly special to me as a local lad. They still remember the team, everything about that day, and just thinking back gives me a bit of a tingle! What a day it was.”

Hibbitt added: “The fans were brilliant all weekend. I remember chatting to Robert Plant about this just recently. He told me it took him three days to get home after seeing us win at Wembley. I would dream about walking out to play in the stadium but never thought it would actually happen.”

Readers also hear from goalkeepers Phil Parkes and Gary Pierce on the rarely heard before story behind who would be handed responsibility between the sticks, as well as current midfielder Tommy Doyle, whose two grandads were, intriguingly, in the City line-up that day.

As well as the 1974 celebrations, there’s plenty of up-to-date content, including columns from head coach Gary O’Neil and captain Maximilian Kilman.

There are also exclusive features with Pedro Neto and Matt Doherty as well as the usual updates from Wolves Women, Wolves Academy and Wolves Foundation.

The special edition of the programme is available to purchase by clicking here or from in and around Molineux on Saturday.
