Tough start to the season for under-18s

Manchester City 4 (Gyabi 21, Borges 31, 59, Sodje 34) Wolves 1 (Hesketh 55)

Wolves under-18s fell to defeat on their opening game of the 2020/21 U18 Premier League North campaign to last season’s champions Manchester City.

In what was expected to be a very tough game for the young Wolves side, with head coach Steve Davis including two under-16s in the starting line-up, it proved to be so, with the side in gold and black going three goals behind in just over half an hour.

Darko Gyabi put City ahead with just over 20 minutes on the clock, before Carlos Borges and Tai Sodje added two more within the next 13 minutes to see last season’s league champions cruising.

However, the spirited Wolves side hit back just after half-time, with Owen Hesketh getting on the end of Lee Harkin’s assist to reduce the deficit to two.

But the Wolves fightback was swiftly halted when Borges netted his second of the afternoon just four minutes later, putting the game beyond doubt.

COMING UP

With the under-18s unable to play at their home ground of Compton Park due to the Covid-19 protocols currently in place at the training ground, Davis’ side are back on the road this weekend, heading to Burnley for an 11am kick-off on Saturday.
