Wolves Women have recalled forward Skye Owen following two successful loan spells with Sporting Khalsa.
The 17-year-old first joined the Division One Midlands outfit in November 2022 and went on to score 11 goals and claim five assists in 19 games, helping Khalsa to a third place finish.
Owen returned to Andy Mulligan’s side, who currently sit fourth, at the start of the 2023/24 campaign and departs having netted a further seven goals.
The youngster made her senior debut in Old Gold in September 2022 and manager Dan McNamara has explained the reasoning behind Owen’s return to Compton with plans for her development to continue in the first-team squad at Wolves.
“Skye is someone we’ve worked hard with over the last few years,” McNamara said. “She’s been part of the youth set up and is someone we earmarked quite early on as having real potential.
“She’s spent a little bit of time away from the club and has been on loan at Khalsa now for the last 12 months – six months of last season and six months of this season.
“I think she’s come on leaps and bounds. She’s shown that in the training sessions and the access that we’ve had to her. We feel now, in the stage we’re at in the league and at the stage Skye’s at within herself, it’s the right time to bring her back and give her an opportunity to showcase what she’s got at tier three.
“I’m delighted to have her back in and I know her dream is to play for Wolves and to represent Wolves. Hopefully that’s something we can help her achieve over the next few weeks in a more consistent manner.”
McNamara has hailed the influence Sporting Khalsa have had on the progression of not only Owen, but Josie Smith and Hannah Sparkes who remain on loan with the Lions.
“A big thanks goes to Sporting Khalsa for their efforts with Skye over the last few months. They’ve provided her with a platform to play really good, competitive football.
“She’s thrived there and scored goals, created goals and been a real figurehead in their push for promotion to tier three themselves.
“Hopefully we can continue that great relationship we have with them. They’ve still got a couple of our players on loan at the minute who are also doing great things and really striving to get into tier three themselves.
“We want to continue to build a platform for really good, young female players to come through and really flourish at the top of the game or wherever their level is.”
