Currently the club’s longest serving player, having made her debut in the 2001/02 season, Price will be stepping into her 22nd FA Cup clash as her team entertain the West Midlands League Division One North side on Sunday (2pm kick-off).
“The FA Cup is a great competition and I love playing in it,” says Price. “We’ve had some really exciting games over the years and hopefully we’ll get a few more this season – but we’ve got to get past Shifnal first and that won’t be easy.
“They may be two leagues below us, but they’ll be massively up for this game and we’ll have to match their commitment if we’re going to get into the next round.”
This round is the furthest that near neighbours Shifnal have reached in their short history, while Wolves’ best effort to date was a 1999/2000 quarter-final appearance in which they were beaten 1-0 by Leeds.
Price has been involved in some memorable FA Cup ties, including last season’s 6-1 win against a Kidderminster Harriers team including some familiar faces.
“That was a tremendous occasion,” recalls the 33-year-old central defender. “It was at Aggborough, their men’s team stadium, and there was a decent crowd so there was a good atmosphere and we were up against some old team mates.
“Their captain Anne Johnson, who is Wolves’ record appearances holder, and Amber Quick – who also played over 300 games for us – were both up against us among others and it was a very enjoyable game played in great spirit.
“Probably the best FA Cup tie I played in was against MK Dons back in the 2010/11 season. It was at their Stadium MK, which had only been opened a couple of years earlier and was a great place to play.
“It was also a fantastic match. It ended 2-2 and we then went through on penalties – and on a personal note it was great because I scored in the match and also stuck our first shoot-out penalty in the net.”
In her 21 FA Cup games to date Price has hit seven goals – a very respectable return for a central defender – and she would like nothing more than to put her name on the scoresheet again this weekend.
“It’s always lovely to get a goal,” she said. “If I can score one to help us get through to the next round that would be great.
“But the most important thing is that as a team we go into the game with the right attitude, work hard for each other throughout and get the job done.”
