Women’s report | Sutton Coldfield 0-2 Wolves

Sutton Coldfield Town Ladies 0 Wolves Women 2 (J. Cross 7, Evans 62)

Wolves Women progressed into the next round of the Vitality FA Cup after a 2-0 victory away at Sutton Coldfield Town on Sunday.

Jade Cross rolled a low ball into goal after just seven minutes to open scoring for Wolves, with the forward finding space within the box before sneaking the ball just beyond the keeper.

Wolves’ threatening play continued with Lowri Walker coming the closest when she tested her luck from distance. The midfielder found herself in a good position before taking a shot which went just wide of the left post.

Although a dry spell in the game, Wolves enjoyed more possession than their hosts going into the second-half.

Dan McNamara’s girls put the game to bed in the second period when midfielder Kate Evans netted within the first 10 minutes of the restart.

Evans was able to fight through an abundance of defenders before putting the ball into the back of the net and secure Wolves’ passage into the next round of the cup.

REACTION

Manager Dan McNamara was pleased that his side made it through in the cup, saying: “It’s great to be in the next round. I never hide my thoughts on the FA Cup, so I’m really pleased and it’s important for us to get into the next round.

“Performance-wise I think we coasted through the game. Credit to Sutton Coldfield first off, I thought they were fantastic and they defended like Trojans. They’ve given a really good account of themselves today and shown which direction the football clubs going in.”

McNamara also expressed his concern with Jade Cross’ limping off during the second-half. He said: “With the games that are coming up, it’s a concern. She said she felt her hamstring at half-time and with centre forwards trying to get them to come off the pitch is often difficult.

“Especially scoring the goals that she has been over the last few weeks. We don’t know anything at the minute, but we’ll have a look at that in training Tuesday and well go from there.”
