Cundle | 'I thought we were exceptional'

Luke Cundle was left pleased and relieved after Wolves under-23s secured a comfortable play-off victory over Stoke City at Molineux on Monday night, earning promotion into Premier League 2 Division 1.

The midfielder scored both goals in a 2-0 win, being picked out by Taylor Perry and Hugo Bueno crosses to find the back of the net, and having had to endure extra-time and penalties in their last two outings, Cundle admitted he was happy that the side were able to get the game over and done with in just 90 minutes.

On play-off final victory

“I thought first-half we were exceptional. Some of the play, some of the patterns in the final third, and we got the two goals we deserved in the first-half.

“Second-half was a bit different, we had to stay in the game, sit in a bit more and defend, but thankfully we got over the line.

“We’ve been to penalties the last two games and it’s not nice penalties. Whoever says it’s nice is lying. For it to be over in 90 minutes today, it was much easier for us.”

On netting another brace

“I was delighted with my two goals tonight, especially the second one. I don’t think I’ve ever hit a sweeter strike than that.

“But I was just pleased that I was able to score the goals which helped the team win tonight.”

On confidence running through the team

“We’ve been confident in all of our games really, especially the last five or six games. We came up short against West Brom, which was disappointing for the lads who are all in there and we know the staff were all gutted.

“It gave us that extra 10 per cent. Losing against West Brom gave us that extra push to go on and win tonight.

“But thankfully we knew these games were coming up to win and I think we got what we deserved in the end.”

On being part of a tight-knit squad

“Those sorts of games are really important for your development. They’re good games, competitive, and they’re tough games because teams bring strong sides for play-off finals, so it’s big for the young lads to play in these games.

“We’ve all been together for quite a long time, four or five years, most of the lads in there. We’re all quite close, not just on the pitch, but off the pitch as well, so it obviously helps when you’re playing with your friends on the pitch.”
