Midfielder Mason Rees is the latest academy prospect to have penned his first professional contract at Wolves.
Despite only just entering the second year of his scholarship, Rees has made the step up into the under-21s squad for 2023/24 and has now been rewarded for his progression through the ranks.
Rees, 17, first joined Wolves at the age of just nine and has made his way up the development programme at Compton Park in recent years.
A player beyond his years, Rees was tasting under-18s football at the age of 15 and featured for the under-21s two seasons ago in the EFL Trophy.
The centre midfielder has previously captained at under-18 level and has already got minutes under his belt for James Collins’ 21s in the current campaign.
Academy manager for football, Jon Hunter-Barratt, has expressed his pleasure at seeing another player come through the pathway to sign a first professional deal and said: “Mason’s another one who has been here a long time after he joined at under-9s, so he’s come all the way through the development programme.
“As a 15-year-old he was training with the 18s and now as an 17-year-old he’s playing in the under-21s set-up. He’s had a really good pre-season and is a really keen worker who is happy to do the work without the ball for the team.
“It’s a nice moment for him and his family to be rewarded with a professional contract. He is the type of character who likes to lead by example whilst he’s on the pitch. You can see that with the way he plays and he doesn’t leave anything behind.”
