The 18-year-old midfielder from Kingswinford was unlucky not to mark his step-up to senior football with his first goal, after he had a second-half effort cleared off the line in Nanjing, but Perry is delighted to be among the first-team environment and learning from head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
On learning from Nuno
“Nuno’s a great manager, so it’s great to learn from a manager like him. Training under him, you can progress and make yourself a better player.
“The main difference of working under Nuno compared to the Academy is the intensity that the manager wants from the players. He expects high standards, so when you come up to train with the first-team he wants you to be as good as them.
“You’ve got to show that you’re willing to train, put 100 per cent in, prove that you’re good enough and prove a point to the manager.”
On being part of the first-team squad
“It’s definitely a good place to be, especially with Nuno and all the players around, there’s great team spirit, they’re really helpful as well. They’re professional and are willing to help you if you need help.
“Training with the first-team is definitely a much different environment as they demand a lot off you, which I think helps you as a player, and makes you think a lot about yourself.
“It’s been really good to be in and around them as you can improve by training and playing alongside them.”
On the start of his pre-season preparations
“It was tough, a very tough start, but it was good to be back with the boys and with the first-team as well, which has been a great experience. It was good to get back and used to kicking the ball about and getting into full flow.
“It was a lot of hard and long days, especially as I was with the first-team, so they were tough sessions, two sessions a day, and a lot of running involved, but it was good for my fitness.
“Being away with the first-team at St George’s Park was a great experience, the facilities were great there, and really got us prepared for China.”
On the upcoming season
“I’m looking forwards to it, but it will come quick. I’m looking forwards to getting started, playing games, and hopefully I can push on this year and have a good season.”
