Three goals from his strikeforce – including a brace from Niall Ennis and an Austin Samuels effort – secured a 3-1 win over the Saints, with the teams swapping places at the top of the league.
With four league games remaining, Edwards is calling on his players to continue their momentum as they aim for promotion into Division 1.
On Southampton victory
“I’m really pleased with the result and the performance, because that was the most important thing. We can never guarantee the result, but we can guarantee that we’re going to work hard, stick together, play as a team, be compact when we don’t have the ball and play to our shape.
“A lot of this is what the manager [Nuno] talks about, that we want to try and emulate, and then hopefully the result looks after itself. I felt we did that.
“The first goal was key, and we managed to go 1-0 up, then after we conceded it was a 50/50 game. They were strong at set pieces and being direct with Sam Gallagher’s threat – who’s a top player – but I thought we dealt with that better the longer the game went on.
“I’m disappointed we conceded from a corner, but we recovered really well, and it was very timely to score just before half-time with a fantastic goal, then I thought the second-half was fairly comfortable.
“Well done to the players, but it’s not over. We’ve got to continue to work hard and keep doing what we’re doing.”
On strike partnership
“I’m really pleased for Niall and Austin because they’ve really deserved it, they worked incredibly hard. Niall always seems to score at Molineux, he loves it here, and I’m really pleased for Austin as well because he’s done really well for us this season.
“Austin started with the under-18s and has been able to step up and stay in the group. He’s worked incredibly hard and has continued to do that, but I’m really pleased for both of them.
“I thought the first two goals were excellent – they were great team goals. We stayed on the ball for a long period of time, showed good control, and the second goal from Niall in the second half was a good individual goal.
“He’s done that a couple of times already this season, so hopefully he can keep doing it, for himself, for the duration of the season.”
On Samuels’ injury
“I think it’s a sprained shoulder. There didn’t seem to be any dislocation when I just went in to see him, so hopefully he’s okay and recovers really quickly.”
On league position
“It’s not over yet, but it’s nice to be top of the table. It’s good, but there’s still four games to go and they’re really tough games as well.
“We’ve just got to continue to work hard, continue to work the way we do every single day, stay together as a team and hopefully we can achieve something this season.”
