Semedo | 'We will get more wins, we will get more points'

Nelson Semedo is confident Wolves can quickly turn their Premier League start into a positive one as the Old Gold head to Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon to face Everton.

Despite both teams going into this weekend’s clash still searching for their first points of the 2023/24 campaign, the right-back feels he is part of a team which is still in its early stages under new head coach Gary O’Neil but believes that with more time working on the training pitch the results will begin to go in Wolves’ favour.

On Wolves’ start to the season

“We lost some big players, but the team is responding well. We did a good pre-season, but then one coach left, another came in just a couple of days before the season, and he needs time with us.

“We like his ideas, he’s a good coach and the way he communicates with us is good, so I think he’s going to help us a lot.

“But we need time to work in this system and we’ve got to do it while we’re competing in the Premier League. It’s a harder way to do it, but we have a good team to do it.”

On facing Everton on Saturday

“It’s important because we wanted to start well. We’ve had two losses now, which were tough games, but we can still start well.

“I remember two seasons ago, we didn’t start the season bad and we were playing very well, but we didn’t get results for the first three games and then were playing for the European spots.

“It’s still the beginning, it’s still early and we can still do a good start. We will get more wins, we will get more points and we will get to where we want to be.”

On last season’s visit to Goodison Park

“It was a big pressure, but the win was incredible. The way we won, we scored in the 90-something minute, so that is the kind of game which used to be against us and other teams would score in the last minute.

“But we did a good performance. It was our first game under Lopetegui and the way we scored the goal, the way we celebrated and all the environment, it was a really important game for us.”

On leading by example

“To be honest, I’m not the kind of guy who talks too much. But I’m a guy that works hard and that’s the way I want to guys to see me.

“I want them to see me working hard and that will encourage them to work harder as well. I don’t want to be the person who tells others to work hard and then not do it myself.

“I don’t talk too much, but the way I train and compete is the example that I want the others to take from me.”

On aims for this season

“It’s difficult to put a place on it, but we obviously want to do better than what we did last season – at least.

“This is the way we have to think about it. Of course, we will always go game by game, but looking forward we want to do much better than last season because I know we can do it.

“Let’s see [if he will score more goals]. With this system, we’ll see. But I hope so.”
