Nunes | 'Next season they are going to see the best of me'

Matheus Nunes insists there is still more to come and admits he has ‘not shown anything yet’ as his first season at Wolves approaches its conclusion.

The Old Gold face Everton in a final fixture in front of their home fans on Saturday and the midfielder has reflected on his debut campaign with the club as he praises the impact Julen Lopetegui has had not only on the team, but his own personal peformances.

On having more to give

“To be honest, I haven’t shown anything yet. I’m going to be completely sincerely honest with you. It doesn’t matter who speaks or who doesn’t speak, I try not to listen to that because there are a lot of people who talk bad things about you, but I know that people who really know me, they know that I haven’t done anything yet.

“I want to show what I’m working on, and I’m pretty sure next season they are going to see the best of me. There is more to come from me – for sure.”

On his first season at Wolves

“It was a learning season, I would say. I didn’t expect it to be the way it was when I first came here. Our team has a lot of quality but as a team, we didn’t show that.

“Everyone was obviously disappointed how we started the season, not only the fans but the players and the staff – everybody at the club.

“We all thought the season would go so much different than it did, but it is the way it is and we have to learn and try to get a lesson out of it and put our focus on doing better next season.”

On improving under Lopetegui

“We have struggled a lot, but we’ve also had a lot of opportunities to see how we can improve and get better. Everybody could see we were not playing well, but after Julen’s arrival, we had a switch and we changed the way we were approaching every game and this was an important change.

“He’s very intense in the way he works and he’s very intense in how he wants everything. He’s very sure of his ideas and how he wants the club to work together, but we were also a little bit apart in terms of connection between the players and the fans and he brought that connection back.

“He brought everybody together and the way he works every day, and his mindset, was just what we needed, so it's all been very good since he arrived.”

On being settled at Molineux

“I feel happier now. I do. I think everybody can see that I am so much happier now. I go to the games with a different feeling and it’s been good. Like I said, since the gaffer arrived, everything has changed for me.

“I didn’t play as I wanted to consistently every game, but that happens. Even at Sporting, that would happen for me as well, but me and the team has everything to do much better for next season.”

On two difficult games to end the season

“Being out of the relegation zone and safe for next season is of course a relief for us, so we can play with less pressure, but it’s always good games, especially when you’re playing against teams who still have objectives to achieve. It’s even better because it will push us even harder.

“To play our last home game against Everton on Saturday, we need to give everything for our fans and do the best we can so they can all leave happy.

“This is important to give us momentum going into next season, so we have to approach the game like we are still trying to get out of the relegation zone, so it will be two good matches.”
