Coady called up for England duty

Wolves captain Conor Coady has received his first senior England call-up.

The defender, who wore the England armband during his teenage years as a youth international, has been selected for the Three Lions’ upcoming UEFA Nations League group stage matches against Iceland and Denmark.

Coady represented England at junior level from under-16 to under-20, captaining his country to victory at the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship as they became the first England side to win an international tournament in 17 years.

The 27-year-old has been the rock at the heart of Wolves’ defence for the past three seasons, playing in all but two gold and black fixtures – last season’s Carabao Cup matches – since the club was promoted back into the Premier League.

His sparkling form at the back during last season helped Wolves to keep 23 clean sheets in all competitions, with his displays in Wolves’ maiden European appearance in almost 40 years earning Coady a place in the UEFA Europa League Squad of the Season.

Coady comes into the Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the matches away in Reykjavik against Iceland on Saturday 5th September and against the Danes in Copenhagen on Tuesday 8th September.

If the centre-back was to make his senior bow next week, he would become the first Wolves player to appear for England since Matt Jarvis back in March 2011.
