Almost the perfect performance for Nuno

Nuno Espirito Santo insists his players performed exactly how he wanted them to against Tottenham Hotspur but were punished by mistakes at both ends of the pitch.

Wolves were the better side for long periods against last season’s Champions League finalists but were guilty of not taking their chances. Then, after Adama Traore’s fine equaliser, the hosts were harshly punished as Jan Vertonghen found space from a corner to head home an injury time winner, but Nuno remained proud.

On the performance

“I’m pleased with the performance, I thought we played very good. We should defend situations better, but we created a lot of chances, we dominated the game, I’m pleased with the boys today.

“Mistakes happen in football, it happened at the end with a set piece, but I’m proud of the way the team performed. The crowd felt that we were in the game, on the front foot.

“We played good, so we have to bounce back from the result and sustain our level of performance.”

On Spurs’ late winner

“The final moments of the game require a lot of focus. It’s a corner, we must stay in the game until the end. We were more obsessed about scoring than defending and this can happen. We were thinking about scoring the second.

“We always do the same analysis, it’s not the result that interests us, it’s how we do things, the way we want to do things, and today we did what we wanted with mistakes in both areas, but I’m happy.”

On Traore’s strike

“It was a good goal. It’s one of the things that he must do. He has the talent.

“He’s progressing, he’s improving. Since the beginning we’ve tried to improve aspects of his game and he’s doing very good. He still has a long way to go, but we are positive – fantastic player.

“He’s unique, he knows he needs to work for the team, it’s not only things he does in the offensive part, he keeps the balance, keeps the shape, so he’ll keep improving.”

On missing chances

“We had chances. We created a lot of things, we broke Tottenham many times, with a lot of situations on both sides. Some of those with the keeper, some of those need to be more clinical with the final touch.

“It was a tough game, against a good team, they were very organised. It’s not easy, so let’s work on the final touch to make those chances goals.”
