The home side went into the half time break with a two-goal lead following a Jamie Paterson goal and a Tammy Abraham penalty.
Abraham added to City's lead on 49minutes, finishing from close range. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson then scored late in the game but it would prove to be nothing more than a consolation as Wolves fell to defeat in Bristol.
Speaking after the game, Lambert said: “I’m really angry, first and foremost, because I don’t think we turned up. I’m angry because I know we’re a lot better than that.
“We started pretty decent and had a good chance to go 1-0 up which would have been really good for us.
“But we went away from everything that’s been great for us over the past couple of months.
“We lost second balls, we lost duals, we weren’t clinical and those are things I don’t want to see my team labelled with.
“We were too passive in a lot of aspects of the game, too slow, not aggressive enough without the ball so we got what we deserved.
“I can’t stand here and be too critical because we’ve been on an incredible run and really pulled away from everything.
“Credit to the team for that but I don’t expect that standard today. I expect a lot higher.
“We have to have standards and if you fall below those then you feel it."
With the game balanced at 0-0, Nouha Dicko had an early opportunity to give Wolves the lead but City 'keeper, Frank Fielding, denied the foward.
“Especially when you consider the goal on Tuesday night. That was a big moment for him," said the Head Coach.
“If that goes in then it’s a different game and I think the crowd would have gone against them.
“Instead they got the goal and it gave the crowd something to hang on to.
“Their second goal was the penalty and I’d have to see it again to see if it was the right decision.
“Before their third goal, Doc has to shoot in the box, but they went up the park and scored.
“We never did enough. That’s the bottom line."
Bodvarsson's goal waas one of the few positives Lambert could find in defeat.
He said: “That was good for him and with Morgan making his full debut.
“Little positives in there but, ultimately, football is about winning and we fell short of the standards I expect.
“You can’t afford to think the job’s done. I don’t want to let one game overshadow everything the players have done because they’ve been brilliant
“But that wasn’t the standard I expect."
