Matt Doherty said he enjoyed the additional attacking responsibility in Saturday’s draw at Blackburn.
Doherty and fellow full back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson were both given license to get further forward to try and increase Wolves’ attacking options, and the Irishman produced an assist for Dave Edwards’ equalising goal and also went close to a winner in added time.
“We were able to push forward from full back,” said Doherty.
“I’m not sure we have done that before positionally even through my time at Wolves in terms of how far forward.
“At times we were almost in midfield, that is where Rob (Edwards) wanted us to be, and it was quite enjoyable.
“I ended up in the box a few times and hopefully in that position I can get on the end of things a bit more.
“The way he wants us to play is quite exciting and hopefully at home against Derby we can really show what we can do.”
Wolves created plenty of chances at Ewood Park, and many shots on goal, without being able to find any more than the one goal headed home by Dave Edwards.
And while results haven’t been great in recent weeks, Doherty believes performances have been better than those results suggest, and that it is about converting more of the opportunities created.
“The run of results we have been on has been terrible to be honest,” says Doherty.
“We got a draw at Blackburn which is an alright result but we were going for three points, albeit despite any lack of confidence from the run we have been on.
“Performances though have certainly not been terrible at all so confidence hasn’t been affected that much.
“We all knew what the gameplan was and tried to carry it out.
“I thought we maybe had chances to nick it on Saturday.
“I know they had chances at 1-0 and Lonners made a great save but we had some good chances in the first half.

Rob Edwards has thanked the Wolves staff and supporters for their backing since he took over as interim head coach – and says that level of support will be there for whoever gets the permanent role.
Edwards has worked at Wolves as player, Academy coach, first team coach and now interim head coach, and is greatly enjoying the current role.
The process is continuing to appoint a permanent successor to Walter Zenga, with Edwards making sure he and the staff are fully focused on the job of preparing for Saturday’s visit of Derby County (12.30pm).
"I genuinely haven’t looked at what’s been said, on social media or anything.I’m not on any of that and it probably helps keep my focus more on the task at hand,” he says.
"I’d like to say thank you.
“We do feel the support, I’ve had loads of texts and messages from everyone, as has Scott (Sellars).
“The staff at Molineux and Compton have all said they’re really with us and behind us which is great.
"It’s a good feeling.
“But everyone was before as well, and whoever is next it’ll be the same again, because ultimately the club is the most important thing, not us."
"All you think about is the next game, the next day of training and the team, constantly thinking about the team and the players.
“That’s taking up all my energy, my time and my focus."
Wolves are currently 17th in the Sky Bet Championship table having taken 17 points from the first 15 games of the season.
Edwards, who has opted for shorter and more intense training sessions since taking charge, wants the team to try and focus on climbing the table and not think too much about what is below.
"I’m a big believer in training how you play,” he said.
“I think it’s important.
“We’ve said to the players that we’ll manage their load and how long they train for, but while we’re out there they give us 100 per cent effort and train as they play.
"We’ve made the times slightly different. It’s got to be intense.
“In terms of the table I don’t want people looking over their shoulders at the moment and worrying.
“Blackburn were in there when we played them the other day, and they’re a good team.
"I don’t think the table has sorted itself out yet (but) I understand there’s a realism that it’s very tight at the moment.”
Edwards has also given a fitness update on players currently under treatment, including Carl Ikeme, withdrawn at half time at Ewood Park with a hip injury.
"We’re going to try and reduce the inflammation,” said Edwards.
“He’s touch and go and we’ll know more in a few days.
"Ola John had a grade two hamstring strain late in the week which is disappointing. He could be looking more at December time.
"Pricey we’re hoping to have back in training today.”
