Something To Build On

Danny Batth believes Wolves' 0-0 draw with Birmingham City on Sunday afternoon is a result to build on as the end of the season nears.

There are players now that are stepping up from that younger age group and putting solid performances in"

Both sides had opportunities to win the game but neither could capitalise and the points were shared at Molineux.

Speaking after the game, the skipper said: “I think you saw two teams that were both determined not to lose the game.

“I thought we edged in the first half and Birmingham came on strong in the second half.

“It was a game that could have gone either way and we discussed in the dressing room that was the kind of game we could have lost before Christmas.

“It shows that we’ve developed a bit of character and there are players now that are stepping up from that younger age group and putting solid performances in.

“It was a game for defenders really, it was scrappy, it was tight and it was what we were expecting.

“It could have been a set piece or a mistake that could have cost either team the game but we managed to come away with a clean sheet and that’s something to build on.

“In the end I think a draw was probably fair. Obviously the supporters would have wanted to win but they won’t be too disappointed with a draw."

At 25-years-old, Danny Batth was the oldest player in Wolves' back line but the captain hailed his squadmates' performance.

“I think the average age of the team is one of the youngest in the division so it’s really good for everyone playing in a derby like that," he said.

“The clean sheet was vital. As a back four we’ve said let’s focus on our defending and make sure that we’re right."

“We’ve got a clean sheet today and we’re proud of that.

“You can never doubt the desire of the lads here. You’ve got players who have come right through the ages.

“They know what the club’s about and what it means to the supporters.

“It was a big derby, it wasn’t three points but it was a draw and that takes us onto three games unbeaten now at home which is something the fans have deserved all season.

"Any team wants to do well at home.

“If you can get results away from home that’s great but obviously at home you want to express yourself, you want to get on the ball.

“Over the last couple of games we’ve shown a bit more composure on the ball, it’s not been so direct.

“That extra pass has allowed us to maintain a bit of defensive shape and a bit more compactness in defensive areas."

With nine games of the Sky Bet Championship season remaining, the skipper has called for the squad to work as hard as possible.

“We’ve got some big games," explained Batth before adding: "We’ve got to go to the likes of Burnley and Hull so still got big teams to play.

“There are a lot of tests still to come so it’s all about improving and making sure we’re in the best shape possible for next season.

“If there is a chance of a late push then we keep playing for every Saturday and make sure we get those three points.

“There’s a psychological element to it but, in the camp, we’ve also got young players that have developed this season.

“If this is a transitional season then we need to make sure that we don’t let it peter out and we keep going."
