“There is no better feeling” – that was the Matt Doherty verdict after the in-form defender snatched victory for Wolves against Bristol City with a last-gasp header.
Having already set up the opener for Nathan Byrne, Doherty rose at the far post to head home in the 94th minute of Tuesday night’s contest, after Aden Flint had levelled for the Robins.
It was Doherty’s second late winner against City in his career, having done the same in a 2-1 victory at Ashton Gate in the early stages of the Sky Bet League One title-winning season.
“We were talking on the pitch after the game about how that is the best way to win a game, in the very last minute,” says the defender.
“And that is whether it is you scoring personally or the team.
“There is no better feeling than that.
“We would have been massively disappointed with just a point.
“We went 1-0 up and were comfortable enough but then they got an equaliser.
“We managed to come back and win it in the end which was pretty fulfilling!
“The first half wasn’t the best but it was still 0-0.
“We hadn’t conceded and we thought we would get chances in the second half.
“The gaffer said if we kept going we would get chances to win it and fortunately we did!
“I thought we deserved a clean sheet over the 90 minutes but we didn’t get it.”
Doherty now has an assist in each of Wolves’ last three games, as well as the goal, and is enjoying a new lease of life as a right-footed left back.
“I love going forward,” he declares.
“But the gaffer, the coaching staff and my Dad, have told me to be a defender first.
“I am not naturally always thinking defensively so I have knuckled down and worked hard to make sure I don’t get carried away and get forward every time.
“I am freed up that when I do my job defensively I can get forward and in the last few weeks I have managed to do some pretty good things.
“At the start when I was playing left back, going forward I wasn’t that comfortable.
“But it is like anything, once you do it for long enough you get more and more comfortable.
“I love going forward and I can go both ways when I am playing on the left.”
Wolves now face a tough test in Sunday’s Midlands derby with a Birmingham City side currently on the cusp of the race for the play-offs.
Doherty says confidence remains high despite some mixed results in recent weeks.
“It is two home wins in a row and that is especially important with such a big game to come for us and the fans on Sunday,” he said.
“We don’t lack confidence – people might think it but we have got a good group of lads who are young and confident.
“Things just haven’t fallen for us.
“But hopefully now we can get another result on Sunday and get plenty of wins between now and the end of the season.”
